Had one years ago, seriously considering buying another. Anyone still using them? Safer nowadays? Best Brands?

TIA

I have one that is probably about 4 years old........I just changed the wick on it the other day and it is still working pretty good.

I bought one at Lowes years ago. Still works great. Keep it clean and I pour in the smell good stuff in the fuel to keep the stink down. Don't forget to crack a window or two in the house. By a carbon monoxide detector and you are all set.

The kerosene burns pretty clean.....just make sure that you take it outside when you first light it, and then again you turn it off.......thats the only time that black smoke will come out.

That should be fine, as long as you have no animals that might knock it over......and like flowmaster said......make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector.

:yeahthat: They're better than they used to be but they still stink. :dead: They are also much safer as they have automatic trips if the heater is tipped. I got one as backup after the furnace and loss of power problems from last year but fortunately I haven't had to light it off this season. :yay:

Kerosun, which is now Toyostove, was the leader and de facto standard but I haven't seen them around here for awhile. I think the one that I got from Wal-Mart is a Duraheat or Dyna-Glo and cost around $100.

But that will let all the heat out! I made sure I sealed my place up tight, then I stuck a kerosene heater in each of the kids rooms. :yay: Sure they have a little trouble breathing in the morning, but it sure does cut down on our oil bill. :jet:

There should never be black smoke. It usually means something isn't adjusted right. Try turning it off s l o w l y.

I have one for back-up if the power goes off but it is too cold to go get kerosene :lmao:

Kerosene heater I have there is no SLOOW way to shut it off.. it snuffs the wick.. and releases black smoke..

Personally depending on the size area you are looking at heating, go with the heater that looks like a jet engine.. it at least has a fan and circulates the heat. MUCH more efficient. Of course if your electric goes out I don't know how much good it will do..

I hope they don't, I find it very entertaining when they're twitching all over the house. :jet:

I'll bet you like it when they run around in circles too, banging into the furniture and walls.

I've had a kerosene heater for 7 years now and use it daily in the winter. My place is pretty ventilated but I would never have it on while I wasn't watching it. I like it because it's pretty much instant heat. Within 1/2 hour my place is OK temp wise after turning it on in the morning. I live in a ground level garage apartment with not much insulation and the house heaters just don't do the job of keeping an even temp. Were I in a more modern place where the temp could be kept even I probably wouldn't have one except maybe to use if/when the electric went off. My friends do worry about me because the fumes can be very harmful. I also had one when I lived in Crofton years ago because the heat pump just couldn't handle the load in deep winter. I've been paying $2.99 a gallon for the past two years for it which is also something to take into consideration. It's not cheap.

Got a kerosene heater going right now in my living room as I have had for the past six weeks. Its helps a lot and I would not be without one as long as I own this house. Granted its a pain in the arse but the comfort from it outweighs all that. :howdy:

Evidently,

many folks had the same idea. Sold-out across much of the county. First stop was McKays on Great Mills, they had them but not the "omni type" I was after. So after visits to everywhere else I could think of, got the last one at the ACE in Lusby.

Thanks all!

When I lived in Maine the condo I bought had electric baseboard heat. After the first $400 electric bill I bought a kerosene heater. I ran that sucker day and night, never cracked a window. The only time I ever turned it off was to fuel it or to change the wick. I moved into a bigger house and bought another one and ran both 24/7. Worked good and I changed the wicks about twice a year. :yay:

We use 2 of them we live in an older no so well insulated house. We put one in the basement and one on the rear porch where the dogs sleep. They do pretty good. They do stink on occassion. There not good if you have breathing problems of any kind. They will give ya a headache if they do get to stinking.
