Key West

Been a long time since I've been there. Sailed in on a Morgan 41 OutIsland. Can't say I remember much of it. I do remember climbing a tall wire fence to get back to the boat while the cops just kinda watched us. I guess as long as we weren't causing chaos and discontent they leave people alone.

Watching the sunset keeping any eye out for the 'green flash' was a must.

After you've hit all the usual touristy spots, check out this hole-in-the-wall on the far side of Shrimp Harbor. It's a stone's throw from the shipyard where I work. Mel Fisher's docks his salvage boats just on the other side of the harbor too..

In addition to excellent food and a totally laid back atmosphere, they have some of the best musicians too.

I almost ran into one with about nothing on. Not watching where I was going. This is what, I have nothing against gays, but these, um, dudes are way over the line. Fishnets and mini skirts? High heels? Gag me.

I'm sure you can get that there, too...

Things to do? Places to eat? Places to drink?

Go....

If you like to just sit there and waste the day drinking and chatting, looking at the water and the pelicans and $2 million sport fishermen, Islmorada, the Whale Bar.

Good grub, too.

Just don't eat conk anything. Anywhere. I can't think of a bigger waste of eating time.

Larry, i know to each his own but have eaten conch fritters and conch chowder. Undercooked conch reminds me a bit of tough calamari. But i have had it where it tastes pretty good. Also sometimes add lemon or lime when cooking to help tendirize. Again, JMHO

I gave it every chance. Chowder, fritters, whatever they had it in and in several different places. I was even with some folks from KW who knew their conch.

So, for sure, to each his own. :buddies:

:yay:

The upper keys are where it's at, as far as I'm concerned.

I liked the conch fritters; I don't recall conch chowder, though.

Go snorkeling. I wanted to take the sea plane ride out to the Dry Tortugas Nat Park and spend the day, but we ran out of time. Find a marina and feed the tarpon. Some let you and sell chunks of fish for feed. Hemmingway's home as was mentioned is kinda cool. Thought it was funny his bed was roped off, but one of the 6 toed cats was sleeping on it. The urinal fountain is also quite different. I did charter a guide and fish the flats, but January is not a good time for fishing. Cool trip though. We caught a few small barracuda and I had a huge one follow the lure right up to the bow where I was standing. He just stopped there. Made me think about stepping back a bit.

Key West, first time I saw something diving that was bigger than me. 11 foot nurse shark.

Same dive, we were gliding along and here comes a 'cuda. The current was taking him past us and he kept drifting closer....closer...got to within 3 feet or so. Kept my hands behind my back and we never took our eyes off of one another. He wasn't big, maybe 3 foot but man, underwater, them bastards are MEAN looking. :jameo:

That is a big nurse shark, saw a bunch in the middle keys, but most were about 5'. Lots of 'cudas. Never dove in Key West. Saw a reef shark while snorkeling though. He was moving away and I kept following.Ended up a long way from the boat. Swam back against the dang current.
