Kid food

I never ate baby food, my mom had a "baby food grinder" that she stuck regular food in that turned it into baby food. I also wore cloth diapers. So much cheaper, this was in the mid 70's.

I think it is a phase with kids also. My son was a very picky eater when he was small, chicken nuggets, pbj's, fish sticks, kraft m+c, spaghetti. I swear he took a pbj to lunch through all his elementary school years and into middle school. Once he got into high school he started to eat a lot more different things. Nowadays that he is in college, he reminds me of a mini galloping gourmet chef with some of the dishes i have seen him whip up when he is home. He probably eats a wider variety of food than i do.

How does that start, anyway? What adult ever ate a chicken nugget before they had toddlers? Who keeps Kraft mac & cheese in their cupboard before they have children?

I mean, I did it too. There was all kinds of weird crap in my fridge and pantry that was never there before I had kids, and isn't there now that they're grown. Pop Tarts, Captain Crunch, fish sticks, Kool-Aid.... why do we buy this stuff and get our kids used to it? My daughter has proved that you can feed your kids what you eat and they'll be fine with it. My grandson eats like a grown up, scaled down when he was little, but now at 6 he eats pretty much anything. His treats are the same things my daughter buys for the adults - cookies and chips, etc, but they are considered a treat and not "part of a meal".

Is it advertising? Like all those commercials for junk food and "breakfast" items, so kids beg for them and we give in? Or do we, the adults, think it's fun to buy Lunchables instead of a normal packed lunch? It's just weird and another sociological conundrum.

It's what other kids eat. My oldest never had juice until we started having play dates with a mom's club. Once they get the taste, and it's oh so sweet and yummy, water and milk is seemingly very bland

I have to say though that he is the best eater. My mom bitched me out for letting him try salad when he was 11 months old (tiny pieces), and to this day he eats salad as a snack and even takes it to school.

My sister made a huge mistake and never gave her kids what they didn't like (even baby food). They went through the no carb thing, and now those kids won't even eat potatoes - they are so picky

I never, ever made substitute meals for my kids. I left for work at 6 am and sometimes didn't get home until 6 pm (commuting and traffic). I simply did not have the time or energy. If they didn't like the spinach or brussel sprouts the ex and I liked, I would make them a different vegetable and that's it. Pop tarts were not for breakfast but as a treat. I did get the sugary cereals way too much but I liked them too. I think we all cave in too but the key is to balance it all out. Not to mention all the sweet, sugary stuff is on the lower shelves, a bulls eye view for kids.

As long as like 80% of what your kid eats is real food the snacks aren't going to hurt them. They run and play and burn it all off. I get home so late to start cooking that monster isnt always awake for my dinner so I just ensure there are things that I can give her when I get home that are "real food" before she has a snack. Oatmeal, eggs, leftovers.. something like that she even asks me now if certain foods "count" as real food lol. I don't stress over it. Her school has a great cook and hot food at school for breakfast and lunch so she eats better than I do most days. if she is awake for dinner, she has to eat it before a snack. She is, at three, able to tell the difference between days dinner is ready and days she will eat something else. kids are adaptable like that.

If your kid only likes snacks just make them eat a certain amount of the real food before they can have one. And if they dont, then they dont get the snack. If you give in they will hold out. And they wont die of starvation missing one meal.

But...but...I still like fishsticks. :twitch:

My Son was a picky eater too. I would make both of my kids take at least one bite of an item that they didn't like. I know this might sound horrible to some, but if they didn't eat very much of a dinner because they didn't like what I cooked, I would wrap it up and put it in the fridge. If they came back later, saying they wanted a snack, I would pull it out & re-heat it. No snacks if they didn't eat what was on their plate. I would have child size portions on their plates too. Not one of my kids are picky eaters now that they are adults, and not one of them is over-weight either. I don't believe in the Clean-your-plate rule either.

What veggies are you adding to your salad?

Oh stop...

I was thinking if their kiddos really do enjoy eatting salad it would be a great time to add small bits of cauliflower, broccoli and cucumbers without them paying much attention.

Tragic when you have to SNEAK cucumbers.

My daughter absolutely loves it when I make ranch dip and give her cucumbers and carrots to dip in it.

I have a picky 3 year old. He used to not be picky. He would eat whatever we were eating then he just stopped. So I would give in and give him what I knew he would eat. I have been trying to expand the foods he eats. I came across a blog a week ago and found a lot of useful info.
