Kids and coffee

What's your opinion of kids drinking coffee? I was raise Mormon and didn't start drinking coffee until after I joined the Navy so I have no expirence with this. I see kids aged 13 and 14 at Starbucks getting coffee all the time and think it's not good, but am I wrong? I don't think my kids should drink coffee until they have grown.

You are not wrong in thinking it is not good for them. Coffee is quite the assault on the system even for young adults. Takes awhile to develop tolerance and then the addiction.

My question would be why do you care and what on earth would you propose we do about it?

Curious. I'm not going to let my kids drink coffee, and I realize that when they get older I can't be there 24/7, but hopefully I'll have set a precedent by then. That's my plan, I was just curious what other demon spawn raisers thought of it. Maybe I'm way out in left field, I don't know. Like I said, I was raised in a coffee free environment so I have no background on the subject.

I would be more concerned about all the calories they are drinking in those chi-chi coffees in addition to the caffeine. I see teenaged girls buying Starbucks' Frappes & Lattes with this & that syrup added. They are drinking high amounts of sugar calories on top of the caffeine. Not to mention spending a fortune doing it. That right there is a crime. :jet: Paying $5-6.00 for coffee is crazy IMO.

It's no different than soda's.

I regulated my kids' intake of soda when they were 13-14. Now, it's much harder to do, and I have to pick my battles with the 17 yo.

However, Mountain Dew has a lot of caffeine compared to regular cola - but it has less than most of these coffees. :coffee:

My family was huge coffee drinkers (and tea drinkers). Which is odd, since I grew up in the deep South. But I remember asking my dad why he was drinking coffee when it was already 90 degrees and he said it kept his temperature regulated - inside was the same as the outside.

Anyway, as a kid, like any kid I'm sure, I always wanted what the grown ups had. So a "treat" was a cup of coffee. It was basically a demitasse cup of milk with a splash of coffee. I never really liked it until I got much older, but it sure was nice to pretend.

My point is, I think like so many things, if you don't teach that it's okay in moderation and instead just straight up ban it, then it's going to be a lot worse as a "I'm going to sneak this with my friends" thing.

Shame, like we are talking about coffee like it's alcohol.

All things in moderation, including moderation.

A six ounce cup of coffee = no problem. Back to back 20 oz. cups = problem.

Click on Bann's link. Coffee surpasses soda and energy drinks. I was stunned!

Crazy isn't it. I took a much closer look at caffiene content once I became pregnant. I was never a coffee drinker, but I did have an occasional latte. 1 tiny latte was more caffiene than 2 sodas.

Probably if it was an occasional coffee it would be ok. As parents I guess you should try to get your children to consider the ingredients, etc in foods and drinks and think about what they are injesting and what the effects could be, but its the same as trying to tell teenagers anything I guess.

Are you going to be almost done being pregnant yet in a little while? :coffee:
