Killer Cops

Sunbathing can be hazardous to your health

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - Two police officers patrolling the beach in an SUV on Monday ran over and killed a sunbather, authorities said.
The officers did not immediately realize they ran over the woman and continued driving, police Cmdr. Tom Chronister said in a statement.
The officers, who were not immediately identified, had stopped on a small berm of sand to watch a swimmer whom they believed to be in distress. When they saw the swimmer was fine, they drove over the berm and apparently over the woman's head, authorities said.
A witness called the Oxnard Fire Department to report the woman was bleeding on the beach just south of the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort. The woman, Cindy Conolly, 49, of Sioux City, Iowa, was in town for her son's wedding, said Mike Feiler, senior deputy medical examiner in the Ventura County coroner's office.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday. The officers have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.
Oxnard is located about 55 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Yikes.

Probably the result of them thinking the beach was clear and therefore led to them not paying much mind to pedestrians.

I think I will write my state and federal representatives and plea for a law banning all vehicles to no less than a mile from all beaches.

Wonder how many of us normal citizens that hit and killed a person like this would be on "paid leave". We would be waiting the out come of the investigation in jail...... Just sayin

I feel bad for the cops as I am sure there was no ill intent but bottom line is it was the responsibility of the vehicle operator to be sure that the path was clear before driving.

What a STUPID thing to say. I am sure you cannot be so ignorant as to think ANYone involved in an ACCIDENT resulting in a fatality would sit in jail without charges. AND- in order to CHARGE manslaughter and negligent homicide by motor vehicle, it is absolutely REQUIRED that additional circumstances exist in order to prosecute. For instance alcohol or drugs must be involved or grossly excessive speeds or recklessness must take place.

There WILL be a wrongful death suit against the cops here. And the family of the decedent will win it. And they will collecet MILLIONS. But without criminal intent, or gross recklessness, there is no CRIME. There is no basis for any arrest...for a cop ar ANY citizen.

I would say that it is negligent and reckless to to drive over a berm that you can't see over on a BEACH, where hello people LAY to sunbathe. Not only that but it was technically a hit and run, I'd like to see you explain to the police that you didn't realize you hit anything after running over a persons head. You or I would be in jail right now until the investigation was complete, believe it.

ETA..... I am not saying that the officers knew they hit this woman and purposely kept going, in fact I am sure that on sand they didn't realize it at all but I'd bet a pay check that you or I trying to explain that just wouldn't hold up the way it has in this instance.
