it's also a tradition in Spain. For epiphany, they make a 3 kings cake with a baby Jesus figure inside. whoever gets the piece with the figurine has to throw a party for " Mardi Gras" ( I can't remember the Spanish name right now)

Tell you this it is a long story to tell. I ma going to make it as short as I can without leaving out too much.. LOL

On January 6th the French would choose their king and queen. They would put a bean in the cake and the guy who retrieves the beans was crown the king. Then they would also do the same thing for the ladies they would put silver beans and a gold bean in a cake then they slice it who ever got the gold bean became the kings queen and the others who receive the silver bean was the queen maid.. This is called Epiphany or the 12th day after Christmas.. Also known as kings day. And this day is the beginning of Mardi Gras until fat Tuesday.

Now the tradition that is lived on is that the three colors on the cake is for the three kings and the baby inside the cake is Jesus. the purple on the cake is for Justice, the green is for faith and the yellow ( Gold) is for power. The shaped pf the cake is round to represent the path the kings took to confuse king Herod. King Herod was the one who wanted to kill baby Jesus.

My son won last year at a church bake off for his version of a king cake. Which was an espresso flavor king cake. He beat out some pissed off old ladies. :lmao: They could not believe he won... He loves to bake.

Heres a quick recipe for a king cake.

King Cake Recipe
Make your own King Cake with our recipe

Ingredients

1 can of cinnamon rolls, with icing
3/4 cup of sugar, separated into 3 parts of 1/4 each
food coloring

Separate the cinnamon rolls and roll them out by hand so that they look like a hot dog. Shape the roll into an oval, pinch the ends together, and place on a cookie sheet. Cook as directed.
While they are cooking, use food coloring to dye sugar. Make one part purple using blue and red, one part green, and one part gold using yellow. When they are finished cooking, ice the tops with the white icing. Sprinkle the different colors of sugars alternating as you go around the oval. Enjoy!
