Can anyone recommend a good sealant for a kichen drain that is leaking? I have tightened all the connections but the *seal* around the seating of the drain is loose and leaking.....I do not want to replace....just a cheap fix to seal the drain.....any help please?

Have you tried plumbers putty?

Does that create a permanent waterproof seal? I am headed up to True Valve in a few.....but they have all teenagers working there and I am not sure if they will know what to recommend. I have tightened all fixings but the actual drain is not seated tightly so it is leaking. I need a permanent seal .........

I know how to take everything apart and fix but it seems with plumbing that everytime you try to fix one thing then something else goes.....so I am trying to do this the fast and easy way with basically using a sealant to solve the problem

See if they have a small piece of rubber you could cut and install. If not, any small tube of "Rubber Sealant" will work. Get clear.

Permanent? Is anything permanent?

You can get a good seal with it, the barnd I have used is called "Oatey". Make sure you clean the surfaces really well and if there was a gasket in place when you disassemble it then you probably want one when you put it back together.

It's probably just the gaskets. Gaskets are cheap.

No gaskets....this is the bottom of the sink drain....it screws into the bottom of the sink and then onto the pipe....the seating is off so it is leaking....to be fixed right I need to take the damn drain out and replace but that means taking down pipes and I am not going there.....the pipes are old and I don't even want to go there........

I have tightened everything....I am not taking this drain out....I am going to seal and hope it holds......taking it out means disconnecting pipes and I am not going to do that.....pipes are old and today is Sunday (kinda hard to get a plumber).....LOL

How are you planning on getting any sealant where the drain meets the sink if you don't plan on taking it apart? My suggestion for your desire to do it right, :sarcasm: place a bucket under the drain to catch the leakage and dump regularly.

I hear you but if I can get a sealant to *seal* around the bottom of the drain then I will not need to take it apart........

Then what you are looking for is something like "Mighty Putty" or "Leak Ender 2000"? Don't know where these are sold other than on TV and I know not how they would work.

Experience has shown me that quick fixes require fixing more often than doing it right in the first place.

I agree the sink needs to be fixed correctly, but right now I am fighting broncitis (sp) and I have the energy level of a gnat. My sink is leaking and needs to be fixed like now. I am going for the quick fix and will repair correctly later.....

:yeahthat: If the pipes are in such condition that you don't want to mess with them, don't touch anything, use a bucket for now, get all the parts you need, THEN take it apart and replace. Chances are if the pipes are at all dirty and/or wet, anything you use probably won't hold anyway. If you get a 2-part ribbon epoxy, that will adhere wet or dry, but you'll never get it off without more damage.

Why does it need to be fixed now if you aren't going to do it right? If the issue is that it won't hold water get a small rubber mat (or one of those things that help you open jars) and place over the drain before filling.

I bought some pipe repair epoxy.....dries in an hour even when wet. Thanks for all your help.
