Lack of Parent Volunteers

Why is it so hard to find parent volunteers to help with after school functions? There must be atleast 1200 kids that go to Esperanza Middle School and they couldnt get 25 parents to volunteer to help work the Fall Festival this past Friday.

Not me personally but, I think many parents are so involved in work and getting thier kids back and forth from other activities that they just can't/don't find the time. Perhaps as an incentive, the school should offer extra credit to kids if they and thier parents were to sign-up to help/assist with these types of events. Just a thought.

well at Dent's carnival, it was not run well either. When you are scheduled for a certain position/game station you don't get off/waiting for your rotating shift so you can take your own children around to the activites. It leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of the "reliable" volunteers. The new ones need to step up. Maybe get the local high school's early childhood ed department included, get those high school girls involved for the games and have it count towards extra credit on a test or final grade./community service.

As a parent of a middle schooler, I don't want to participate/volunteer with after school functions. We have other things to do on our weekends.

I leave my house at 7:00am and get home around 5:45pm. I have to make dinner, check oldest homework, bathe my 1 year old, make sure my 10 year old has bathed and brushed teeth. I have to get everything ready for the next day. Then I can finally sit down for 30 minutes before I am ready to go to sleep. I do not have time to volunteer.

Because bratty children, bureaucratic teachers and power tripping PTA mothers have made it no fun to do these things anymore.

And if you REALLY want to enjoy volunteering on behalf of your child, get involved with their sports programs. :jet:

I have to work a full time job and do not get off untill 4:30-5:00ish, so it makes it really hard for me to help with after school activities. It is hard for me to take time off from work since someone needs to cover me while I am away...most folks do not want to stay that late on a Friday evening, so I am stuck there, It stinks, but I am happy to have a job with times so hard right now, I will not complain...

The community and schools are missing out on a great resource - GRANDPARENTS. As a grandparent of an Esperanza Middle schooler I would love to chaperone, volunteer for school functions IF I knew about them. As a former working mother I know exactly how difficult and hectic life is when working full time with a family. Just not enough hours in the day or energy to go around. I used to leave notes taped to my mirror so that I knew who was to be picked up, when and for what. The mirror is now tape free and has been for a very long time. I would love nothing more than to get out there with the kids and share with them my time, love and laughter. I am a terrific Grammie. Just ask the young man in the 7th grade at school with only one eyebrow remaining. (Long story and too silly to tell here). With so many contractors and military away from their families I feel badly that more kids don't know their grandparents. We are a great source with an abundance of time and love on our hands. By the way, should a background check be necessary, that can be accomplished too. My only crime is having gotten old (er) but I still have a lot of living to do. Call me, I'm available.

It is just amazing that more parents dont help out. Esperanzas Fall Festival/Dance was a success and there were alot of kids that participated. The school staff and organizers of the event did an excellent job. They had a huge list of things that parents could do/donate if they were unable to work the event. I was just shocked that out of all of those students more parents werent able to help. I think every kid that has the courage to even want to attend an after school event should be given the opportunity. I think every parent should help out with 1 event a school year. Weither you donate a dollar or an hour of time it would be well worth it.

Grandparents ROCK!! There is an application for volunteers. You can check that out and the local school calendars for events at the following link: St. Mary's County Public Schools

Hubby has taken a day or 2 off to help with field trips, and we did help with a school dance once....it was an evening dance. But my son has not really cared to go to them any more ( maybe because we were there LOL!!! ).

My son goes to EMS also, my hubby and I are the Youth Directors at our church so that takes up a lot of our time......we love spending time with the Middle School/High School kids and doing activities with them thru the church and my son invites his friends from school to join in the church youth group activities....I would like to do more for the school but the after school activities are just too hard for us and we are so busy with the Youth Group, it is easy to burn out if you spread your self to thin..

It is your duty to over extend yourself.

I raise my daughter with good morals. She gets straight A's. Has never been in trouble at school. Always has perfect attendance. I send supplies to every party. I make sure her homework is done and she reads every night. I do my part thank you.
