I recently bought a Macbook Air w/out the reader... don't need it.

New iMac desktops no longer have cd reader/writers. With the cloud, bluetooth, airdrop, yellowtoe, rainbow, and app store, they are no longer needed….

I steadfastly refuse to be absorbed by the Borg. No cloud computing for me. External drives aren't that expensive. I'm sick and tired of the industry force-feeding me with their ideas of the next great things. I don't mind technical upgrades, in fact I embrace them, but I only embrace the ones I want, and I'll dayum well decide how I'll set up and use my computer and the software I want to use.

ok when was the last time you purchased 'off the shelf' software, that came with a CD or DVD ...
