Laptop

I know nothing
My advice... go to Circuit City or Best Buy, get the warranty, break it in a couple years, get a new one. Rinse and repeat.

As an IT "professional" (term used loosely) Thats what I did.

I got a lemon HP laptop that I made Best buy send back to HP.

I pulled my harddrive and shipped it off. If I get a new one, Id be just as happy

This is the only way to beat companies and planned obsolescence.

Well, I decided to suck it up and forget about the internal wireless failure and bought a USB wireless device. I'm happy even though now all my USBs are used up so I buy an expander USB. Everything is good for a week until about an hour ago it just died. Turns on, you hear the disk start to turn, then there are three beeps and nothing else. No display no activity. This HP at least is a POS.

Just working from memory... I think 3 beeps is a video card failure. You can reference the beep errors on HPs site.

That would make sense. No picture at all and now that I listen more closely I can hear the drive spinning. I'm sure thats all on the mother board so I'm screwed. Maybe I can get a MB wo the cpu.

I'm in search of a new laptop. The one I have, Toshiba Satellite, is over 5 years old and can't handle more than two programs anymore. I'm considering another Toshiba, but would like some insight. Btw- my price range is around $700/800. Thanks in Advance!

Random thoughts:

You will not be happy with an $ 800 laptop with Windows Virus on it - way too much crap running on it with all the more processor you will get for the money IMHO

what are the specs of your old one ? what newer software have you install since you bought the old one ?

is your old on only have 256 Mb of memory ? when it the last time you have a wipe and reinstall ?

I have a P II 366 Dell Latitude w/ 256 Mb of Ram that runs XP, for common every day tasks ... internet, email ..... 2000 vintage games

however if your trying to run some newer game, unless your buying an Alienware Area 51, which is a full desktop replacement ... laptops are made for long battery running / less power consumption .....

slower processors, hard drives spin slower , basic video chip sets .....

Does the drive just spin, or do you hear a "click click click", pause..... "click click click" ? The clicks would indicate either a corrupted MBR or a failed drive. Can you boot from a CD? (I have a disk at the house that we can run some tests from).

I'd bring it over, but I'm very laid up right now. Hurt my back...

Also, try an external monitor for kicks and giggles. If the vid card failed, it probably won't work either.

Troubleshooting Using Beep Codes (System e-buzzer)

3 beeps is memory......

I think all I'm hearing is the e buzzer, nothing after. No output from the video port. No clicks, just the turning motor. I'm guessing either p/s or video card.

Thanks for the help, I hope you get up and around soon.

I have been with Dell for MANY years and I am a loyal customer despite the trouble I had with the last XPS I had. I have been looking at the HP's and they are looking sweet, BUT my girlfriend has had 3 HP's since I have bought my one Dell laptop and there is no way I will ever buy an HP because of that. Customer service is what you make of it. You draw more flies with honey. I have not had any major issues with technical support and they are always courteous with me. I have also never had ANY issues with my service agreements. I usually buy the 4 yr. agreement and I get the accidental breakage coverage too since I have 3 kids. I have only used them twice and both times it was my fault the machine got broke, and that was just the keyboard. All in all I will never stray from Dell! JMHO! :howdy:

Pull the memory card(s), clean the contacts and re-insert them. Use an ink eraser, gently. Just one more thing to try before you give it last rites....

And thanx. Just getting up to pee is a challenge....

I was loading pellets into the truck last weekend, thought I pulled a muscle in my mid-back. Got a bit better, then lots worse. No doubt I screwed up my back. I know the nerve pain from a herniated disk all too well. Going to the doc at this point is useless, he'll just take an x-ray and tell me to give it 4-6 weeks to heal before anything else. So, right now it's pain killers and the couch.

Yeeeeeeeouch! Yeah I have a few of those myself and I definitely feel for ya! I hope the pain killers help. You might try some anti inflammatory type stuff too to help with any swelling. I hope you feel better soon! :huggy:
