Light bulbs...

The ones we have tried do not give off sufficient light for reading. Also problem with mercury is becoming more widely known. I have tried them every so often, but don't like them and they stay in the box.

LED should be better. Now available on Christmas lights. Hope they catch on and my CREE stock goes up.

I agree about the harsh light. They don't really work with dimmers either, but for general lighting use they're good.

You're not supposed to use these bulbs with dimmers or variable lamps etc...

They require a fixed voltage that doesn't change...

And yes, the lighting is harsh, but that's really what you look like in the mirror...

I know, three of these bulbs are in my vanity mirror...

I've replaced several blown compacts in the last month.. So much for longer life:ohwell:

I think I"ll just stick to low watt bulbs, unplug what I'm not using and beat the kids for leaving all the lights on in the house:jet:

I put in a timer system using X-10 protocols. Lights turn on and off in places they are needed so they are never left on by accident. Put in motion sensors in the halls by the stairwell so they turn on long enough for safe passage, then turn right back off.

One thing I don't like about these bulbs is the sham warranty. Read the fine print, you typically have to have the original packaging, the sales receipt, and ship it back to the manufacturer during this 5-7 year warranty period...

Who's still got all this four years later for a $5 light bulb?

I got my electric bill last week and saw a huge difference. I had only replaced 1/2 the bulbs around the middle of the billing cycle.

I am very interested in the LED bulbs too.

Another thing I have noticed is I thought I had 2 burn out, but they mysteriously came back on and have been working fine since.

Had I quickly replaced them, I would have just thought I had 2 burn out.

it was about 10 years ago that my dad went to use his garden hose and it had split.
so he went downstairs to his file cabinet, pulled out the original package that had the receipt stapled to it, coiled up the hose and went down and got sears to give him a new hose based on that lifetime warranty that his current faulty hose had come with... in 1963

they honored the warranty They might have though he was nuts and just did it to get rid of him before people got hurt.:killingme

Here is an interesting link to how I feel about them
American Thinker: Ban the Bulb?

BTW, They don't work with dimmers.
But what do I care :sarcasm: I am an electrician. I will get all the service calls when it is time to retrofit.

And remember, even though there are no laws mandating it, these bulbs should not be trown in the trash.

I will stockpile a lifetimes worth of bulbs if this were to ever happen. The only thing worse than the thought of manufacturers no longer making Heinz ketchup is the thought of not having real lightbulbs.

When I replaced all of mine, my electric bill went down dramatically as well. The light is fine IMO. I think ppl complaining about the light bought low wattage bulbs. I highly recommend them. :yay:

Obama destroyed America
:killingme What a crock of crap (disposal & safety measures). Does anyone know how many fluorescent tubes and CFL's there are in commercial buildings?? And have been for DECADES!! :killingme

I didn't know congress had mandated everyone buy them exclusively by 2014 though. LED's will be prominent by then anyway.
