Little Hummingbirds

I'm going to fill the hummingbird feeders tomorrow


Last year we happened to have red gel clings on the windows that the kids had put up, and the hummingbirds were drawn to them before I had the feeders out

Score! I was on the back deck reading a book and enjoying an adult beverage, when the little guy buzzed up, flashed his ruby throat at me, and plugged in not four feet from my spot. Zipped off and returned for more.

I put my feeder out this past Sunday (4/21). I saw my first visitor yesterday evening. A female flew up a few times to drink. I'm in Northern Calvert. Welcome back!

Filled our feeders yesterday. My son can't wait to see them, he loved watching them last year. Once it's warm enough to plant hibiscus in my deck planters and all the day lilies start to bloom, they hang around even more. Cute little birds!

We've got families of woodpeckers in our woods and have put out the seed blocks for woodpeckers on the front side of the house... love to watch the babies come peck! The huge woodpeckers live high up in the trees in the backyard and we watch them from our patio.... and I mean HUGE.

You are so nice.... woodpeckers grate my nerves... peck peck peck peck peck... usually at the butt crack of dawn.

My feeders went up last weekend but I've been so crazy busy, getting home rather late, so I haven't been able to enjoy my front porch during daylight hours. I don't know if I've had any visitors yet but I usually get a pretty steady flow.

I had one Humming Bird that buzzed my head every morning last year. No idea why, but he would scare the hell out of me because I would think it was a wasp or bee at first. Nothing like watching a groggy woman duck and cover at 0700 .

I haven't seen any this year yet. I had a stern talking to with my cat Fritz last year and told him he better not catch, kill, or eat any of my humming birds. It's bad enough I have to rescue bunnies from him.

We lived in Texas before we moved here and Fritz used to catch humming birds all the time. Pissed me off. First time I thought it was a fluke and scolded him because he killed it. Then he caught five more that same week , but brought them to me alive. Scolded him more and then he stopped and went back to rabbits.

I haven't seen hummingbirds yet. I do feed the birds everyday; and now have a new addition I have never seen before. Cowbirds. They are really fun to watch; not much afraid of humans. Apparently, they are not nice in the bird world; they lay their eggs in another birds nest, and leave, which from what I read, they are responsible for the decrease of other bird populations. And, then there are the squirrels! Oh well, enough of that. Again, welcome!

Where did you live in Texas? My parents retired in The Woodlands oustide of Houston. We lived in Kingwood also outside of Houston before we moved to Maryland. My family is from Louisiana, originally.

Hehe, I am new to posting but I have been reading forums since late 2010, when we moved here. I wanted to get a feel for the people here and I have found that although we have different beliefs, the people here are all pretty cool. People could attempt to give me crap but it would be wasted time on their part. I’m a Navy wife and I have some seriously thick skin. Lol

I am usually up by 0300. No alarm, I just wake up and begin my day. I actually slept in till 0445 a few days this week and got up with my Beloved and then cooked his breakfast and lunch…fixing breakfast while groggy is not conducive to his breakfast because his normal eggs and ham becomes just ham..lmao He informed me that he likes it when I get up earlier because his breakfast is better if I am fully awake and cooking it…LOL I agreed with him.

Cowbirds..I had to look that up. I have seen them around my house but didn’t know what they were. Oh don’t get me started on the squirrels around here…the ones at my house are mean little chits!! I love squirrels, even had one as a pet growing up. But the ones around here are stupid and mean. Last year on one of those cold rainy days, my cat Fritz, lead me to a baby one that had fallen or had been pushed out of the nest. Poor little guy had bite marks all over him, not from my cat but from a squirrel. I tried to save him but he died. It broke my heart. I should give Fritz permission to eat the mean little buggers but then he always brings me half of his kills and the idea of having half eaten squirrel on my porch in the mornings just doesn’t do it for me. It’s bad enough he hunts moles..last year he caught one, brought it to me and dropped it at my feet, looked up as if to say, “Here, a gift.” I said to him, “Friiiitz, I don’t want that.” He promptly picked it up, walked four feet away and began eating it. I’m cringing because I can hear the cracking and crunching of the bones. Bleh! Then, once he was done, he promptly up-chucked it on my porch! I wanted to strangle my beloved hunter. SHEESH!

Thanks for the Welcome! We were stationed at N.A.S Corpus Christi…God forsaken place IMO. Only thing I liked about it was my job. When we had the opportunity to transfer here, I jumped on it and sent my Beloved Husband’s resume in. I’m a crazy animal/nature freak and I fell in love with Maryland back in the 90’s when stationed at Andrews.

We’re from Florida and I am use to everything being green all year round, which made moving to a dry, grey place that never rains (Tx) a huge shock to my senses. I LOVE being outside and it was just too hot and windy there for me to enjoy being outside. On the other hand, I love it here. I sit on my deck every morning and enjoy my coffee. I was telling one young lady yesterday, by the time I am sick of the cold, summer is here and by the time I am sick of the heat, fall is here. I Love It.

I finally saw my hummers yesterday afternoon. I can't tell you how happy those little buzzing birds make me.

Since last year I started having territoral fights over the feeders, I spaced them further apart this year.

I could sit on the porch for hours and just watch them flit by.

Had one fly to about 6 inches of my face this morning to say hi..

I think he liked my bright yellow jacket, either that or he was asking where the hell his food is (we haven't put out our feeders yet)

I love holding humming bords, I just wish it wasn't because my cat brings them to me.

Spotted our first two days ago, sitting on a branch of all things. BUt they are damn insistent about keeping the feeders full. They will zoom up to the sliding glass door and hover around to get your attention
