The group describes the campaign as an effort to revive an ancient Islamic custom. I was in Bahrain at the Holiday Inn. We were walking down a hallway, and an Arab in his bathrobe thingy was walking the other way. My friend looked at him as we passed and said "Howdy, Saudi!"

The Arab stopped and turned around. I thought he was going to yell or something, but instead he said "that's what they called me at Berkley."

Turns out he was a Colonel in the UAE Air Force. He ended up buying us drinks all evening, and told us all about his country and answered our questions.

He explained they could have multiple wives as long as they could treat each one the same. He only had one wife because she wouldn't let him have any more.

I was interested in knowing why he could drink. He said that as long as he wasn't in his own country, it was okay. He hinted that using prostitutes was okay for the same reason.

It's kind of the whole "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." It's not technically allowed, but it is accepted.
