Is it the pressure of stardom? Or are creative people just predisposed to mental illness? I mean, it's not like Mel Gibson can't afford a driver when he wants to go out drinking.
Typically alcoholics have low self-worth and drink to escape what they consider their effed up lives. Maybe that's what draws these people to the spotlight to begin with - low self-worth - and the drugs and booze are just part of that?
Really, who in their right mind would want to be followed around by photographers every second of the day and have everything they do become tabloid fodder?

We just don't notice when some goober gets a DUI and says stupid crap. For some reason, people pay attention to what Mel does off screen.
He's an actor, not a philosopher, politician, or educator. Why does anyone care what he says or does off screen if you like his movies?
