5 baby rabbits in a nest right smack in the middle of my dogs yard.

I covered them back up (used a rubber glove) but I know if I leave them there the dogs will get them.

Sent Inkpen a PM - any other suggestions ?

Awww!!!

Move the dogs now before they pick up the scent! Even if it's just until their eyes open. Keep an eye out for Momma.

Hmm...not the smartest doe, huh?

Yeah - I guess bunnies are not big in the brains department.
I'm on 3 acres - 2 acres are wired for the dogs.
Last year the mother moved a baby right smack into the middle of the yard. The dogs are not vicious (corgis) but one thought the baby was a toy. I found one tossing a young rabbit around in the yard. The rabbit was dead but intact.

To make it all worse I was by my shed and I saw a large chunck of rabbit fur. No blood, bones or other furry parts but just a large knot of rabbit fur. COuld have been my dogs chasing the mother but I've never seen them out run her before. On the other hand my neighbhors cat passes thru my yard often......

Baby bunnies have no scent. Their scent glands are not developed ( same as a fawn).
Mom speed feeds 2 x a day and leaves fast, so her scent is not discovered at the nest site.

Bunnies freeze when they sense danger...hoping thier natural coloration will keep them from being seen.

Wow. You learn something new every day.:yay:

I just learned about putting those static cling decals on your windows to keep birds from smashing in to them. I gotta go get me some.:howdy:

Do tell, please. :yay:

I've found a sparrow and a robin on my back deck, dead apparently because they flew into my sliding glass door. The sparrow, well I was home for that one, watching a movie, when I heard a loud thump against the door glass.

Checked it out, and it was in it's last throes. Poor thing

I honestly have never had a bird fly into any of my windows (that I know of). I once found a dead bird that got somehow trapped on the top of my wood fence.

Maybe it thought it was a woodpecker and got seriously depressed.

Your guess is as good as mine. :howdy:

But, I would like to hear more about those decals for glass windows and doors.

I'm a magazine recycler, I tell people that if they subscribe to cool magazines, I'll take them after they're done so I can read them and pass them along.

I started getting Birds and Blooms, Backyard Living and Outside last month and I keep seeing information about these window clings. You know the ones you stick up at holidays to dress up windows. Only the ones I've seen for this purpose are white, of various birds and quite pretty.

The decals make the glass easier for birds to see and break up reflections.

I read while I post on the forums...

Injured birds are meant to be handled only by qualified, licensed rehabilitators . It is against a lot of state and some federal laws to take in a a sick bird and try to heal it yourself. This includes native species and particularly raptors because of the danger they may pose to people.

If you see a lonely bird or a fledgling on the ground, odds are it's NOT abandoned, just in training and the parents are nearby.

If you find a nestling that has fallen from it's nest before it can fly the best thing to do it to place it back in the nest because birds have a bad sense of smell and probably won't know it was handled.

A whole nest should be placed back in as close a spot as you can tell it originally came from.

Hey Slik,
I met the babies Sunday. They were so tiny!
You coming down this Sunday? I have a dog suit waiting

I'm just glad the dogs never found them.
Can't make it down Sunday - I have to go to PA again this weekend.
I'll be down next time KK is there but you need to figure out a way to vent the suit - I can't imagine 80 degrees in that fur coat:faint:. Plus if I get much fatter I might not fit.

We currently have a female cardinal that spends all day every day fighting her reflection in our office window. We've hung long strips of paper out the window, but that hasn't detered her. The windows are lightly mirrored to lower cooling costs so a sticker would have to be on the outside and we can't get there

While working at Merkle last year we had a dozen bird silloette (sp) decals on our observation windows. There were 3 active feeders right outside and bird strikes were...very rare! Was that due to tinting? or due to Decals? Either way: I rarely found a dead or injured bird over several months of work.
Hope that helps make a decision for you.
Happy bird watching!
