If you're Methodist, the Methodist Church in LaPlata (near Rt 5 and Rt 6) is a decent one.

3 things ya gotta weigh...

Doctrine...(inerrancy, salvation, creation...etc)
Service...contemporary, liturgical, Long/short.. serious/fun?
Outreach (faith without works is DEAD!)...missions? community involvement? service to others....

Wife was Pentacostal...I was Presbyterian...talk about some serious adjustments when were dating! (I've managed to pull her over toward fundamental/Baptist....and I have backed off of picking on Arminians!)

Anyway...weigh those three categories carefully before you choose a church!

We go to a chuch in Hilltop and it's awesome. My grandma says they preach the Word of God. My uncle Stanley used to go to a church in Leonardtown but he stopped. A few years ago he stood up in church during Wednesday night prayer service and swore before God and everybody that he would kill and eat a Bigfoot before he was 40. He tried really hard but he never even saw a footprint or a strand of hair or anything. His 40th birthday was on a Sunday and he decided never to go back to that church again. My grandma said he was an idiot for his boasting and now he was gonna burn in hell just because he was ashamed. Anyways that was a pretty good chuch too and the pastor always rode a motorbike and told people to call him Brother Bob.

My wife and I like Grace Lutheran in La Plata (Rte 6 and 488). They've got traditional & contemporary worship services, a school, an active youth ministry for our kids and are actively involved in community outreach and service. We've had a lot of folks from all kinds of faith backgrounds join and find their niche.

The church isn't perfect (what church is?), but it meets our needs. Without it and the people we've met there, we would have left So MD a few years ago. It's worth checking out.

Chosing a Church

In His Name, be Blessed,

WC if you are seeking a Church, personal bias aside, base your choice on what you believe..

If you believe in the Oneness of God aka Jesus Only then the United Pentecostal.. They deny God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit..

If you do not believe in Once Saved Always Saved (OSAS) then the Southern Baptist is the Church for you.

If you believe OSAS and still ask forgiveness for your sins daily you are in what I call 'Spiritual Conflict' because if you believe in OSAS then asking forgiveness daily is pointless because you were saved once and are heaven bound.

If you believe you are a sinner because you inherited the Original Sins of Adam (Disobeing God) and believe it is okay to ask a Heavenly Saint (one who is in the Spirit Only) to Pray for you, believe Mary is the Most Holy Mother of God considering Christ is God and she gave birth to Him and that she remainded Virgin the remainder of her life and that she was cleansed from all sin in her mother's womb then you are looking for the Roman Catholic Church.

If you believe you were born without sin and that you became a sinner as the result of being exposed to and part of this sinful world, believe James 5:16 and seek "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." which included Heavenly and Bodiless Saints, believe Mary is the Most Holy Mother of God and Theotokos (God Bearer) considering Christ is God and she gave birth to Him and that she remainded Virgin the remainder of her life and that she was cleansed from all sin as the Bible says at the time of the Annunciation then you seek the Eastern Orthodox Church... continued

If you believe that Church is about shouting, speaking in tongues, dancing with the Spirit, rolling in the floors and the like, then you seek the Holiness aka Holy Rollers or other basic Fundementalist Denominations.

If you believe you are heaven bound beyond any doubt then the Roman Catholic or the Eastern Orthodox Churchs are not for you because for the most part, both Churchs believe in Hope in our salvation. We believe that we can not judge ourselves into Heaven no matter how hard we try because God has the final say in the matter..

Do not go to a church because of the best singing, the loudest preachers, the most active congregration while in the pews (Shouting, Rolling in the floor, dancing in the Spirit or tongues) because that is merely entertainment.. Chose a church that best suits your needs where and where you find Peace and Charity (Christ Like Love).. Believe me, I've been where you are now, seeking a Spiritual Home. But expect this of yourself, conform to God and His Word and His Church do not expect God to conform to you because He makes no difference in people. If you wish to learn more of other denominations, please fell free to Email me. I will help you all I can.

God Bless,

Mike

A priest or someone in the Clergy does not rape because the moment he entertains such a horrific thought is the very moment he stops being part of the Clergy.

Not dead yet.
He's Baaaack everybody!

Welcome back, Mike. Better luck in finding a receptive audience this time.

I would, however, be careful in comparing all evangelicals to "jumping in the aisles" types of worship. I consider myself somewhat evangelical, but just try to keep close to what I find in my Bible. Please don't cast aspersions on all of those not of your particular sect.

Welcome back again.

Mig I only just read your post on "the church behind the old Lowes". I think you mean Cornerstone Presbyterian? I used to go there for about a year, many years ago, and a couple of my best friends still go. Not bad, but I was single then, and I agree with your assessment.

When I was shopping around, I visited Leonardtown Baptist, and they were ok. I met people I'd like to give a good sock in the nose, but there were really nice, good folks there as well. A man I ran into at that time was suggesting the Unitarians, and I guess there's one on Chancellor's Run. He was actually atheist, but he went there because the people were friendly.

I currently attend Hollywood Methodist, but we go to the later service, which isn't for everyone, because it is a much older crowd (think: *retiree*) generally. But I know folks who go to the early service like it just fine - it's a younger crowd, young families.

Finally, there's Watercolor's OWN church, which seemed nice enough to me.

Also looking for a new church

We are a pentecostal white family who have attended Assemblies of God churches in the past. We are currently attending a multicultural nondenominational church where I am involved with the worship team and children's church. We love all races and cultures but do not want to be in the minority. We need a church that is a full gospel church that has a family focus including an active youth ministry in the La Plata, Waldorf area. Suggestions appreciated.

First Baptist in La Plata. I realize you said Pentecostal, but the closest one that I'm familiar with that is non-denominational is Ripley Community Church. It is more on the western side of the county. I want to say Pomonkey. It has been years since I've been there and I cannot tell you what it would be like now. My guess, you will find that it is more black than white. First Baptist has a nice mix, my father is a Deacon there.
