Looking For a Good German Shepherd Breeder

When I was 12 I picked out my first dog/puppy (Black Lab) from the Humane Society. It was one of the best dogs ever. I swear it was magically house broken. It was the only dog that wasn't barking in the pound and was still alert. It was a setter mix so it was a wanderer, but that wasn't a problem in our neighborhood.

When my husband was looking for a dog he also went to a Humane Society (different state) and found a black lab puppy who was quiet, but playful and alert in the pen. I might be biased, but I think she is the best dog ever. She is AKG good citizen certified.

I think she is better behaved and has had less health problems than many of my friends' dogs from breeders. I will probably always stick the Humane Society from here on out. Not trying to be too preachy just share some positive experiences with you and let you know the behaviors in "lock up" that seemed to lead to future good behavior.

Thank you, this is very postive. In the end I just want a great dog for my family!

We Love GSD

Just curious, why a GSD?
Have you ever owned one before?
I have 2, so I have some insight as to the breed.

Between my wife and I, we've had 5. I had 3 growing up as a kid, teen, and young adult. The same goes for my wife. I like the charateristics of the breed it fits what we're looking for.

Wow that's alot of puppies! Most all have the same picture background and appear to me to be from a puppy mill  Some do not even list the Sire. hmmm Of course this is just my opinion.

Was trying to be helpful. Don't know much about puppy mills except that they don't treat the dogs well at all and they should all be shut down. I have always gotten my dogs from the pound or a rescue. Good looking out.

Here are a couple of breeders that I know, and trust. I am very picky about breeders.
Eichenluft German Shepherd Dogs - Her dogs are well bred, and what I call "real" GSDs (nothing against any other lines or anything like that). They are from proven working lines and all of the ones that I've met from there have had good personalities and nice structure.
Country Lakes Puppies - German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers - Judy is a nice lady that LOVES her dogs. I have met a number of her GSDs and Goldens. Her set up is very nice, and I really enjoy the puppies and the personalities of the dogs that I've met from there.

FWIW, I am also of the mindset of checking out a rescue. When it comes to a puppy, it really is a crapshoot if knowing what kind of dog your going to get. Even from the BEST breeder on the planet, they will have the ocassional "well, that's not good" dog, that comes from them (and if any breeder ever says that have ALL perfect dogs, run as fast as you can, because they are lieing to you). That being said, getting a young adult can be a godsend. Generally they are easier to housetrain (if they aren't already totally trained, which how awesome is that? lol), and you know what kind of personality they are going to have. I know a couple of GSD rescues that I've met adult dogs from, and they are just AMAZING dogs. You can still get a "young" dog (2ish years old), that still has the energy you want to play with, and yet, you know if it's got the right personality fit for you and your family. :)

Hope that help.
