Looking for advice on Bicycle purchase

If you are looking for a "cruiser" bke, take a look at the Diamondback Wildwood models. I bought mine from Mike's Bikes about 10 years ago. It is a really nice bike for street use and bike trails. Decently priced, too.

Went to Bike Doctor and was asked what I wanted to do, fitted then test drove the bike. Bought a Trek Hybrid 21 speed eight years ago. Great bike, great store.
Didn't want a street bike and didn't want a cruiser, hybrid turned out to be the most comfortable plus you can add on paniers (baskets / saddle bags) to carry stuff. It is fairly light weight compared to the ones at the big box stores.
Mike is a real character who has always done a lot for his community.Try both! Have fun and good luck!

Mike's Bikes on Great Mills Rd. is where I bought my Fuji 5 years ago. After the bike and helmet I spent $300+. It was worth every penny. I went back to Mike to show me how to install a new chain - he did and informed of good maintenance habits and such. And then, he ran my previous purchase through a (much needed) tune up.

I recommend Mike Bike's to anyone interested in a bike.

What Aps said is true regarding exercise though. I well built single speed bike is your bet for that.

No one has mentioned Patuxent Adventure Center in Solomon's. Like Bike Dr, you won't find a "cheap" bike there, but they will find out what you want/need, and fit a bike to you. Just like Bike Dr, they also have free lifetime tune-ups. They have quality bikes. STAY AWAY from Wal-Mart/Target. They are cheap in every way.

See post number 5.

Went there looking for a kayak and was really impressed with the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. Good people.
Didn't really check the bikes out, but if they are as good with them as kayaks, then you should check them out too.

My wife and I are looking to purchase new bicycles for ourselves. we'd like to take advantage of all the great places to ride and get some exercise at the same time. We're not looking for anything to elaborate but are willing to spend a little more money to get a reliable piece of equipment. Where is a good place to shop for these? What kind of money should I figure on spending? Any advice is welcome!

Mike's Bikes. Screw the big box stores. Support a local business that supports the local community more than any of the others

With that get great personal service from a person with vast knowledge.

Thanks EVeryone

Okay, I followed the advice here and avoided the big box stores. My wife and i purchased 2 new bikes from the Bike Doctor in Waldorf. Her bike is ready now and I'll pick it up tonight. MIne will be ready Thursday. We expect to be riding part of the Indian Head rail trail on Sunday! Thanks to everyone who contributed.
I went to Bike Dr. because it's (by far), the closest to my home.
