Former St. Mary's deputy held on assault charge
In a separate matter, 41-year-old Steven M. Vandevander of California, a former St. Mary's sheriff's deputy, remained jailed without bond after a court hearing Tuesday on a charge of committing a first-degree assault on his fiancee.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call on Monday at Vandevander's home and were talking with him, court papers state, when Lydia Ann Steenrod approached and handed the officers a loaded shotgun.
Steenrod told police that during a dispute on Dec. 8, Vandevander "placed the muzzle of the firearm against the victim's head and stated, ‘I'll blow you away,'" sheriff's deputy Thomas D. Seyfried wrote in a statement of probable cause.
Vandevander's former wife obtained a protective order last fall that in part bars him from possessing any firearms until next month, court papers state, but on Monday, "the defendant was in possession of a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, a revolver and numerous shotgun shells."
In addition to the assault charge, Vandevander was charged Monday with violating the protective order.
