Luddite turn signals.... Harley folks....

I'd guess you got your license many moons ago? hand signals are taught. IIRC, to be used all the time unless you're in a tight spot. I happen to agree, fully, with this, again, from the 'motion catches attention' angle of how human vision works.
When I took my road test (1970), many bikes didn't have turn signals, were not required. Hand signals were mandatory during the test.

Youz guys bikes have turn signals?? With like...light bulbs in 'em?? Well I'm done....

Candles.

It's hell when you have to stop, add a candle, get back on, get off, blow it out, get back on, get back off, light it, get back on, get back off, blow it out..... everytime you turn.

OMG! You use a flash light. One that has strobe mode.

These guys dont mention anywhere I can see that hand indications of turns should be used as much as possible. Where is it they teach that? I know quite often, individual
instructors will pass along a personal preference as the Word from On High, thats why I ask. I use the motion thing all the time, SMIDSY is one of my biggest concerns, thats why I waggle my front end at folks who are in any position to cross my path. I'll yank a bulb here in the next few days and see, I havent had a bad bulb since it was new in 2009, so I was just assuming that it would give me the fast blink. Bobs Beemer might not be the best case to draw universal conclusions from.

Dunno. It just seems to me that my folks talked to us about it in terms of an 'affirmative' action given we all don't ride bikes that let us know how much filament life we have left.

These guys are loud, and use arm and hands for a lot more than just communicating intentions..

And there is Preacher Bob, screaming at people about their personal preferences, what they do in their own garages.

"Sinnahs!!! Sinnahs! Thou shall rot in eternal damnation and hell fire!!!! Thou doth cast out the righteous path at thine own peril!!! Repent! Change your base and wicked ways now before it is too late!!!! God HATES Harleys..."

I ride with a group quite a bit and it is quite normal to use both hand and turn signals. I do it most of the time when I'm by myself out of habit. i just put Custom Dynamics led bulbs on my new bike. And yes, my exhausts are all aftermarket.

See, that's another really good reason to use hand signals all the time.

I dont see that in there. What am I missing? Riding in a pack, I agree, hand signals are good, but that's not related to using turn signals when you have faith in your lighting system.

Ha, justt did some research, and Harley signals do indeed flash fast when you have a bad bulb. Why not pull one on yours Larry and see what happens? Also, when you google "Harley turn signal flashing fast", this thread is the number five hit :)

So ghl, what is exactly is the purpose of your thread? Are you trying to shame folks into feeling ackward about using hand signals along with their blinky-do-hickeys so that you don't have to look at it? This is a serious question. Why does it matter at all that some chose to do both?

Just trying to figure out why people choose to do that when they have perfectly functional turn signals. Makes me wonder when I see it, and when I wonder, I ask. I have learned a lot over the years this way. For instance, I never imagined some people might left lane camp solely because they have a turn coming up in 4 miles and simply cannot be bothered to move about the roadway.

I'm not a Harley guy. Too cramped for me. My Strat (Star) didn't let me know when my brake light was out so, I have assumed it doesn't do anything for a signal. Again, there is a simple procedure in place for this, pre ride TCLOCS, (Tires, wheels, brakes) (Controls, brake pedal, clutch, front brake lever) (Lights, electronics, battery) (Oil and other fluids) (Chassis) (Stand(s)) I just don't do it very often. :stupid:

The only one that is a challenge to check is brake light but, it's easy enough to check in a reflection somewhere.

Again, I am a firm believer in motion being the key to catching people's attention and distract them from their phones to be at least vaguely aware of me. I move around like an organ grinder monkey, all the time. Shift in the seat, stretch, hand signal, air guitar, head stretch, legs off and on pegs incessantly, fiddle with mirrors. I move. A lot. I never stay in my lane any longer than I have to if cars are around. I weave, constantly, unless others are too close, oncoming, what have you. Hell, I stand up when going over railroad tracks or just to stretch if it's been awhile.

I have less near miss stories than anyone I know. I can't remember the last one and I attribute it to never going with the flow and being as visible as I can be from a movement standpoint. I think it helps. A lot.
If people are saying "Look at that jackass!" they are. what? Aware of me. I am very considerate of car people, wave when then move over for me. Share at four ways. Never ride anyone's ass. Don't pass when it;s going to be close. Ok, at least not very often. My only gripe is ####tard asshats that ride my ass when traffic ahead of means I got nowhere to go.
