Major TV trouble...

We have a 19" Sanyo (probably 9 yrs old), and the picture was seriously messing up. The color would go wonky and we'd see double of everything. We figured it was finally time to upgrade, so D just went out and bought a 32" Sharp flat panel LCD. :yahoo: We get it home, set it up, and everything seems fine. Five minutes later we go and turn it on, and it's doing the SAME thing the Sanyo was doing! :jameo:

It's not the DirecTV box, because that's brand new. We've unhooked and ruled out the DVD player. Unless both of the input cables from the dish are bad, we don't know what else it would be.

Any ideas?

Replace the input cable from the wall outlet to the direct tv receiver.

There is a voltage that runs on the shield of the RG-6 coax.
Hopefully you have RG-6 in your house.

The cable goes directly from the wall to the receiver. There are two input cables. I know one is definitely RG-6, but I don't know if the other one is (probably not). We unhooked and rehooked everything. I even did the connections outside. It seems to be somewhat better, even on the old TV. We're noticing a little bit of a "ghost" issue though. We can see slight double images, mostly on wording.

Wonky huh?

Yes. :ohwell:

Do you have a set of speakers close to the tv?
sometimes the polarity of the magnets on the speakers will cause tv's to go "wonky"

Put another receiver there. Place the current receiver where the replacement one came from. If it's still the same, it's the cable run from the wall to the splitter/multi-switch.

We ended up buying a new TV a few years ago because we were having the same problem and figured it was time to upgrade. If none of the other TVs in the house are having issued, I would replace the cable like Dowhat said.

We just got a new receiver, so it pretty much has to be the lines.

We just put the new TV back in the box to return it. What a tease that was. :lmao:

The ghosting is most likely being caused by a bad cable. You are seeing reflections of the signal, can be caused by a bad cable, a bad "F" connector, a bad splitter. Do you have a splitter (I'm thinking yes, for the internet). Run a known good cable from the TV to the point closest to where the cable comes to the house, preferably outside the house at the grounding/lightning arrestor. If you are still getting it, it's a call to the cable company. If the problem is gone, it's something in the wiring leading up to the TV.

I would never rule out something just because it's new. A lot of manufacturers don't provide 100% quality testing on every piece of equipment that leaves. For example, have you ever read of anyone having major problems with PC's or laptop straight out of the box or lemon cars?

We have DirecTV and broadband for the net. We can try getting a new splitter. The image has been pretty good for a few hours now. We only notice the ghost effect when we view the "Guide" screen.

That's true. It's not nearly as bad as it was before, so it seems as though it was a bad connection somewhere. If it acts up again we'll definitely switch receivers.

Does it do it when you watch a DVD? If you have a VCR with a COAX connection try that also.

I don't know, we haven't watched a DVD in a while. We'll have to try that. I think it's the cables from the dish to the tv though.
