A man from Portland, Oregon was fired in June for aiding police in thwarting a kidnapping attempt the month before.

On May 12th, Dillon Reagon, 32, heard a coworker yell for help in response to a domestic dispute in the parking lot. Upon exiting the store, he saw "This lady who’s frantic and crying and she's screaming, ‘Somebody help me please! He's stealing my kid, he's kidnapping my child!’”

He and his coworker immediately called the police, and the dispatcher advised them to follow the "drunk, violent man" from a safe distance until police arrived. “At the time, the only thing I was thinking about was the child's safety,” Reagan said. They trailed the man on foot for about three blocks, when officers arrived. After giving their witness statements, the pair returned to the store about 10 minutes later.

The Friday before Mother's Day, I was involved in a kidnapping attempt at my place of work.

A woman had been assaulted and her child had been abducted by a drunk, violent man who was making a quick exit with the child in his arms.

My co-worker and I called the police and followed their directions to follow at a distance to make sure they could find them when the squad care arrived on scene.

Because of the actions of my co-worker and myself, that child was rescued from his abductor and the man was arrested on the spot.

Today, Home Depot terminated my employment.

I was fired for stopping a kidnapper from successfully abducting a child.

why didn't you include the part where after the social media hullaballoo, they offered him his old job back with back pay? And he accepted.

But he left his assigned work without a supervisors permission. Shouldn't he be publicly flogged? :sarcasm:

No kidding. It's insane to me that cult of "Don't Get Involved" has gained so much traction over the last 40 years. Not understanding that part of being a successful society means just that being a part of that society.

That they fired him in the first place tells me that Home Depot sucks. I go to Lowes anyway, but now I'm definitely on a boycott of Home Depot. Just fired off my letter to them a few minutes ago.

Aholes.

I worked for Home Depot for a short period of time ans yes, employees were not supposed to physically stop someone stealing merchandise or get involved in any "police" activity outside the store or help customers if you're already off the clock. Sounds unreasonable but the logic is they they could be sued by the actions of their employees while on the clock. I would have done the same thing the guys did, irregardless of the consequence(s).

Same here. They beat that policy into us. Many stores have this blanket policy. I want to say when I was working there, an HD employee of a different location - I think it was in MD if not maybe VA - was stabbed because he approached someone stealing.

however, being a situation involving a child, I would have done the same thing.
