Married or single?

Financially speaking, what's the best option?

Say the two of you have kids, but none together. One of you makes a good amount of money and the other only makes a modest amount annually. You don't own a house and you don't have a lot of debt.

TIA.

Two incomes are always better than one

I wouldn't get married for that reason though....maybe live together

each have kids, but none together. Neither own a house. Stay single, it's cheaper to buy moving boxes than pay for a divorce.

Yeah, but don't you get a break on taxes and junk if you're married?

I'm not getting married, I'm just asking:lol:

Trust me. It's not worth the tax break. A divorce cost some money. Not saying thats what will happen.

Hey, is this about you?

I will go out on a limb and say the best option for the person making the most money is to stay single :yay:

:yeahthat: Marriage isn't a business arrangement. Get married because you want to have a commitment to each other, because you plan to spend the rest of your lives together, because if you don't stay together, the financial benefits of being married don't make up for the cost of divorce.

The only benefit is to the single person who makes the good living. Especially if happens to be a divorced man who does not get to claim his children. His tax liability will be lowered as he gets a few dependents to offset his tax liability.

No let's use you as an example. Modest income, head of household, two dependents, two child tax credits and most likely some EIC. Chances are you get several grand back each year. You will lose all of that if you get married and go from a few grand to maybe a few hundred.

Unless he owns a home and can write off the mortgage interest, points, taxes ans so on.

Two are always better than one, but not when it comes to taxes. I think MD passed that "domestic partnership" thing as well....not sure though.

Actually, single folks with children get a better break than married with children.

I get way more back each year than I did when I was married (no kids). Food costs seem to be higher when you're single, tough to cook real meals for one and not spend almost as much as if it were for two.

I am so very blessed
I lost a substantial amount of money on my 2007 taxes when Bob and I got married last year. And I mean a LOT. :nomoney:

Well, I don't have kids but still, I would say "Stay Single" if your marrying strictly for financial reasons. Someone commented that it's cheaper to buy moving boxes...I agree!!!

I'm just trying to understand the perspective of a person I know who thinks that married is the ONLY way they can live. Therefore, they pursue every person they look at as a potential spouse. There has to be a reason they feel that way and telling me it's religious is :bs: IMO.

I've never been married, but have been engaged a couple of times. So no, this is not about me. I've no inclination to marry anytime soon:lol:
