Can they build a better community - of course, but every human is capable of that. It is whether or not they choose to. There are many civic, spiritual and community based organizations out there attempting to do just that. Not everybody who helps out is a practicer of any form of martial arts.
Karate class is still kind of scary to me as somebody who advocates peace. However, if I can prevent harm from someone who is intent upon causing it, then I am not advocating violence.
BTW, can you please get rid of the " " in your posts. It's quite annoying.
Just a thought - Instead of the karate form of martial arts, it sounds like you might be better suited to Tai Chi (or Taiji or Qigong). You learn a lot of the same moves as in karate, but you move very s - l - o - w. It helps a lot with your balance and coordination. I know that Russell Therrien teaches courses in Southern Maryland and he used to offer classes on base.
