LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen, who with her twin sister Ashley has grown into an American pop icon and fashion brand, has entered a program for treatment of an eating disorder reported to be anorexia.
The 18-year-old co-star of last month's film "New York Minute" recently "entered a treatment facility to seek professional help for a health-related issue," publicist Michael Pagnotta said on Tuesday.

Not surprising, really.

I had heard about her eating disorder. But prior to reading the article, I was envisioning (dreaming) a disorder similar to that of the "drinkin problem" in "Airplane".

Mary Kate covered in various foods :yum:  She just needs some tender beef sausage and she'll be fine.

:lmao: Both the girls are cute, but they grind my nerves now that they are older. You cannot help but feel sorry for the both of them, they have spent their entire childhood under lights, camera, action. :ohwell:

The whole "countdown till they're legal" sounded a little creepy and perverted to me, and not just because I have daughters. It's like getting a boner for one's sister.

yeah, and getting matching SUVs for their 16th birthday, and never having to work again if they don't choose to.....life's so hard.

I like the Olsen girls. For them to be able to make an empire out of a minor role on an 80's sitcom is just too cool. But when those pics came out a few months ago and it was obvious something was wrong with Mary-Kate, their publicist should have been more upfront about it rather than saying, "No, no - she's just naturally thin."

And, Janey, anorexia is just a symptom of a larger problem. For a young thing like that with her whole life ahead of her to want to starve herself is sad.

no, I wasn't talking about the anorexia.....in general, I have a hard time feeling sorry for celebrities who live in excess -- I loved full house, and I still watch the reruns, but it wasn't like MK & A walked into the studio and auditioned, they happened to live in Cali and they had people pushing them in various directions.

yes, eating disorders are very serious, I did a term paper 2 months ago on eating disorders & how they relate to issues like low self esteem

:yeahthat: Very sad.

For us, on the outside looking in, we think dayum, they have all this money, they have a whole life in front of them, but they missed the foundation. It seems history has shown that child stars have serious mental issues. I'm trying to think of a child star that didn't and I cannot think of one. Maybe I'm just having a brain cramp and somebody else can think of one.

Pretty much ALL stars have mental issues, regardless of their age. Maybe there's not enough room for creativity/talent AND common sense in one human's brain. It's a strange life - jetting around from place to place, no sense of permanance, nobody to tell you to act right, nobody to tell you "no".

Plus that, there's got to be a mental illness associated with wanting adulation from complete strangers and being willing to give up all privacy in order to get it. I know I wouldn't like that - having tabloids make hay out of everything I do, and even make it up if the real story isn't interesting enough.

Look at Princess Diana. The story goes that she was a nice, normal young woman until the glare of the spotlight flaked her out.

So do you think I have a mental illness because I actually want to become president one day?

Parents had a flaky divorce and fought like banshees over the kids and their money. Went on a drug and booze tangent (although he's supposedly sober now). Wasn't he also an emancipated minor at like 16 or something?

Kirk Cameron
He and his sister both are good examples of how to escape that celebrity silliness and have a real life. So thumbs up to Mr. & Mrs. Cameron - they seem to have done a nice job with their kids.

But, then, when was the last time you saw Kirk Cameron's name in lights? We Americans are a bunch of idiots. We only like celebrities that are doing something interesting, like getting hooked on drugs, busting up bars and trying to kill themselves. We don't want to read about Kirk Cameron and his nice wife taking their nice children to church and soccer.

You have that backward. The reason you will never BE President is because you don't have a mental illness that causes you to give up everything in your life for publicity.

Well, he and his wife are both stars of the "Left Behind" movie series. Granted, they're B movies at best, but it's not too shabby to have a lead role in a 12 movie series that is based on best selling novels.

What about Leonardo DiCaprio (sp?) ?

Another "Growing Pains" star who made it good.

Malcolm Jamal Warner? Cosby Show, though he only gets minor roles these days. A few of the other Cosby kids turned out ok, with Tempest Bledsoe (Vanessa) getting her own talk show, and Lisa what's-her-face (Denise) getting some minor roles (Enemy of the State).

Of course, I don't know if they had to battle any demons between their childhood roles and eventually turning out ok as an adult.

Actually, as soon as I land in a place that I figure I'll stay in for awhile, I do plan on running for public office.

vrail is right about McCauley Caulkin.

The Cosby kids. Yeah, you are right, but Bill Cosby made sure they stayed in line. Him and Denise bumped heads, he didn't like her running off and getting married so young. Proved he was right when her marriage failed, but nothing above and beyond "normal" everyday problems between authority figure and teenagers.

Anorexia usually stems from control issues rather than a need to be thin. Sometimes girls think that the only thing in their life that they can control is their weight/food intake. So they stop eating, or binge and purge, to prove that they can control their lives. It's sad. :frown:

You suppose that's rooted in jealousy, so we ordinary Joes and Josies can feel superior to celebrities?

That's one thing that seemed false to me about Mario Puzo's original Godfather novel. The couple of chapters about Hollywood are so cartoonish. He has the male stars as gays and wimps, and the female stars as whores. That stuff comes across as pandering, especially to male readers who supposedly resented their girlfrends or wives swooning over Hollywood hunks. No wonder Coppola left out that stuff and made Johnny Sinatra, er, Fontaine a very minor character.

Janey, the key is right there. They were what? 3?

Still no pity?
