He has been twice. I just have to get a weekend where the kids have nothing. ghetto in st. marys???

Yes there is a "ghetto" in the county. Great Mills Road is considered the center of it. It is about 2 miles long between Rt. 5 & 235. It extends for a couple blocks either side of the road. The more refined people will not go near this area unless they are in an armoured car with police escort. Hookers walk the street openly. The cops arrest them and the court lets them back out. Last count had about 13 liquor stores doing business and the county allows more to open everyday. Except I haven't seen any open in the Target Shopping Center, wonder why? The A & E Motel is an hourly type place the county refuses to take any action on. Must be owned by some influential people. The cops have reserved parking places in front of Canopy Liquors.

I live there and it frankly is not as bad as it is made out to be by folks on this site. There is a mixture of all races, creeds and religion. Incomes vary from section 8 to 175-200K per year. Homes range from trailers to McMansions. Then again, there are areas of the county where a run down trailer worth maybe $1500 is a neighbor to a $400K McMansion. I would imagine that if your from Mayberry RFD, living here would be quite a shock. If your from the Bronx or parts of Chicago, this area is Mayberry.

In my opinion, the county has allowed this area to decline by design. Wealthy landowners desired growth in areas along 235. Had some of this growth been directed toward the core of the area, improvement would follow. The needed upgrades in infrastucture have been delayed and cancelled in order to move money into more affluent areas of the county. And finally, it has been designed as a wharehouse of the poor and less fortunate. All county offices are in Leonardtown. Except the Social Services office which happens to be so conveniently located in this area.

So if you enjoy sterile, clean, well manicured homes, streets and a boring suburban lifestyle, you don't want to live here. If you enjoy diversity, pan handlers, hookers, people living within their means and want a taste of city vibrancy, it may be the place to be.

One problem with your post. Social Services has an office in Leonardtown and Lexington Park. Don't you read the news?

I wouldn't go any further south than Dunkirk if you can help it. I live on the PF/PR border and that drive does suck. Traffic has been extra heavy this week for some reason... you notice that too? wtf

I had a wonderful drive in this morning. But Friday mornings arent so bad, its monday mornings and friday evenings that suck the worst. Its not even the traffic that bothers me the most, its the dumbarsses driving on the road. I hate having to share the road ) Yeh Im pretty close to the prince frederick border too. Do you work up in DC?

Ok, my mistake. Why is there not a branch for Permits or any other Dept. in the Park? Only SS. The copstop in the Square does not count. They are never there. Hhhhmmmm, makes one wonder?

Are you in disagreement with my post or agree?

Read the news? Please explain the relevance. There is no real newspaper in this county not paid and bought by the county.

I said there was one problem and pointed it out so I must have been in agreement with the rest of it. Granted you have to give that Lexington Park is not that bad in the daylight but I will not go there alone after the sun goes down.

Seriously.

This was daytime Wednesday:

I live next to GMHS, and while I was walking back from the store some bum asked me for 80 cents. I was just gonna give him a buck. Then he sees the two fives and a couple ones that I pull out of my pocket, and he starts playing that, "Oh I'll just take the five." "Three?" Game. Don't play me buddy. I know what you're doing. I gave him the buck and walked away.

Seriously, at first I just figured he was some guy going to the store where I came from and was short for cigarettes or something. I'm too damned nice.

What is wrong with you? :smack: You're lucky :pete: you weren't mugged for the few bucks you had on you. The correct answer is "I'm sorry, I don't have any cash on me".

:yeahthat:

I got hit up for money by two guys standing right in front of JC Penney last week. I would've walked right over them had they not moved out of my way as soon as I said I didn't carry cash.

It is unfortunate for everybody outside the Park but the pan handlers and thieves are being forced out of the Park. There are not enough stores other than liquor that people want to shop at. So, if nobody is coming to the Park to shop, the above mentioned people will migrate to where the people are. It is a vicious cycle that I don't have an answer for.

My husband may be taking a job in Lusby. I have been reading about floods in the area. Is this serious enough to make us consider not moving to the area. Also can anyone recomend an area? Anything else anyone can tell me I would appreciate it.

I live in Lusby. It's not bad. The only time I've ever seen a flood here was in a very low lying area and that was during a (rare) hurricane, and it wasn't that bad, and it was gone a few hours later. The schools are good, crime is not bad (and almost none of the crime that does take place is of the random variety... i.e. you're not going to get robbed at an ATM), and most things you need are within a convenient distance.

Downside: It's as dull as a bag of bowling balls. And that's not a specific to Lusby - it's all of Southern Maryland as a whole, which is probably one of the dullest areas on planet earth. But - a lot of people like it that way.

But there are a few liquor stores around, so if you're over 21 that helps - and since you're married, you can get some pretty much any time you want, and that also helps. Make a few friends, have a few bbq's and you'll enjoy yourself immensely. If you enjoy city-livin, you're going to hate it.

Helping with searches

I am from the state of California and Maryland is a great place. Expensive, crime is crime, the water and the people are pretty good. It's like anywhere else. I am 35 minutes from DC and like someone said previously, it depends on what time of day you go. It is like 5 hours to Atlantic city, 6 to New York City, 3.5 hours to Ocean City I feel I am in the middle of everything. Moutains to Ocean.
Here is a link to look up the houses you find on the internet. It helped me when I was looking to buy. Real Property Search Find the county and then the road. It's a good tool.
Welcome!
