He has been twice. I just have to get a weekend where the kids have nothing. ghetto in st. marys???
Yes there is a "ghetto" in the county. Great Mills Road is considered the center of it. It is about 2 miles long between Rt. 5 & 235. It extends for a couple blocks either side of the road. The more refined people will not go near this area unless they are in an armoured car with police escort. Hookers walk the street openly. The cops arrest them and the court lets them back out. Last count had about 13 liquor stores doing business and the county allows more to open everyday. Except I haven't seen any open in the Target Shopping Center, wonder why? The A & E Motel is an hourly type place the county refuses to take any action on. Must be owned by some influential people. The cops have reserved parking places in front of Canopy Liquors.
I live there and it frankly is not as bad as it is made out to be by folks on this site. There is a mixture of all races, creeds and religion. Incomes vary from section 8 to 175-200K per year. Homes range from trailers to McMansions. Then again, there are areas of the county where a run down trailer worth maybe $1500 is a neighbor to a $400K McMansion. I would imagine that if your from Mayberry RFD, living here would be quite a shock. If your from the Bronx or parts of Chicago, this area is Mayberry.
In my opinion, the county has allowed this area to decline by design. Wealthy landowners desired growth in areas along 235. Had some of this growth been directed toward the core of the area, improvement would follow. The needed upgrades in infrastucture have been delayed and cancelled in order to move money into more affluent areas of the county. And finally, it has been designed as a wharehouse of the poor and less fortunate. All county offices are in Leonardtown. Except the Social Services office which happens to be so conveniently located in this area.
So if you enjoy sterile, clean, well manicured homes, streets and a boring suburban lifestyle, you don't want to live here. If you enjoy diversity, pan handlers, hookers, people living within their means and want a taste of city vibrancy, it may be the place to be.
