Ok, I'm not religious, but I was wondering why people say "may god have mercy on him/her." I saw a post in the Caylee Anthony thread where someone said god have mercy on them. Why should he have mercy? They deserve whatever they get.
Why do people say that?

Gods mercy is Gods gift of forgiveness...and perhaps some folks think even the wack-jobs and tards need Gods love and mercey ..they have a chance to repent their sins and find grace and forgiveness thru Jesus Christ and His father, God....otherwise they is going to hell and cook forever........
So any POS scum of the earth can murder and pilage and all he/she has to do is repent and they'll get to heaven? Doesn't sound fair.

Fair?
If someone actually repents (not just says "golly, I'm sorry", but ACTUALLY repents) would you prefer they spend their eternity in hell?

How many people do you think *actually* repent and don't just say it to make themselves feel better?
Besides, I don't want to turn this into a discussion about people repenting. I really want to know why people think god should have mercy on people like Casey Anthony and her parents.
I think the vast majority of people don't actually repent. Earning forgiveness/mercy is not an easy thing. How many people do you think *actually* repent and don't just say it to make themselves feel better?

I'm not overly bright, but I always thought it was an unfinished statement...
"may G-d have mercy on his/her soul because He knows I don't have any for them".
G-d is supposed to be merciful and compassionate, and sometimes in some situations, He may be the only one.
JMO
Maybe it's a common phrase that people use without really thinking back and realizing what they're saying?
I think it's just a compassion thing; a "there but for the grace of God go I" kind of statement.I think it sounds like the opposite. I think it sounds like that person is saying he/she hopes god goes easy on the bad person.

May God have mercy on their souls - praying for God's mercy, regardless of who the person is for whom you pray it, is a Christian thing to do (OMG, I brought that word into it, now Xanquinn and Nuck will have to tell me there is no such thing as a God)
I would find that hypocritical, too, if it were trueI find it hypocritical that christians would want god to have mercy on a murderer but not a gay person.

If you're suggesting that there are some people whose hearts are filled with hatred and actually wish ill on someone, well of course that happens more times per day than I can consider.Stranger things have happened.

But, if you're suggesting that it is the Christian concept that ill be wished upon homosexuals, you couldn't be more wrong. Homosexual actions are considered a sin. So is theft, lust, gluttony, avarice.... things we've all done. Christians are not to judge the sinner (that's God's job). We shouldn't embrace the sin, but we should pray for the sinner's soul, and our own.
