McDonald's Drops Heinz Ketchup

Washington: McDonald's has said it will drop ketchup king Heinz as a supplier of the key hamburger condiment, citing management changes at Heinz that put the company closer to rival Burger King.

The fast food chain said on Friday that it was ending a relationship of over 40 years as it axed Heinz from its supplier list.

"As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time," it said.

In February, US investment star Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway together with Brazil's 3G Capital took over Heinz in a $28 billion deal. That move brought Heinz closer to Burger King, which is controlled by 3G.

McDonald's serves nothing but fake food so they might as well serve fake ketchup. The "golden arches" have become the "fallen arches"...:boo:

Tried Surefine on a whim once. I liked it just fine, and a whole lot cheaper. The next time she went shopping, The War Dept bought Heinz again. :ohwell:

I don't get it. So what if Heinz is 'closer' to Burger King? It's just frikkin' ketchup (sorry Kwilly...). Almost seems that if McD continues to use Heinz, it's like telling the world the McD product is better in spite of the affiliations, a nyah nyah moment.

What's next? Change onion distributors because Wendy's uses the same one?

Heinz has been locked out of almost all US markets since 1973 because there was some issue between the two companies as a result of a mater shortage. So for them to just go to one supplier probably just makes sense in their eyes anyway.

Who makes mcdonald's ketchup?

Currently Golden State Foods supplies much of the ketchup used by McDonalds franchises in the USA. With Heinz used in only a small number of McDonald's outlets.

From the 1950's up until 1973 McDonald's was using and serving Heinz Ketchup. But during a tomato shortage in 1973, Heinz left McDonald's in severely short supply of ketchup, and concentrated it's efforts on the more profitable retail sector of it's ketchup business. This snub was not forgiven for over 30 years.

McDonald's created it's own ketchup recipe soon after, and outsourced the business of packaging to various regional suppliers. McDonald's also relied heavily on Red Gold's food service ketchup. Most notably Red Gold's food service packets of "Fancy Ketchup" for guest use and Red Gold's "Extra Thick Hamburger Ketchup" for it's kitchens.

From 2000 and continuing now... Some McDonald's franchises began to once again serve Heinz ketchup. But for the most part, the majority in the USA still serve ketchup supplied by Golden State Food Service.
