Medals Do Not Equal Military Brilliance

I was watching Meet The Press yesterday, and the first up to attack Bush was Rep. John Murtha, the decorated "war hero". He was ranting the usual rants about getting out now, we can't win, doom and gloom, etc., but there were a couple of very telling statements that he made. He was talking about the need to redeploy troops outside of Iraq, and Russert asked him where they would be sent to. He said that we could easily send them to the UAE, Kuwait, or Qatar. Putting aside the fact that we've pissed off the UAE over the Dubai Ports deal, what makes him think that Kuwait or Qatar would be willing to base tens of thousands of troops?

Murtha also mentioned basing the troops at Okinawa, Japan... which is over 5,000 miles from Iraq as the crow flies... but the crow can fly over China and we probably would have to fly around it, so make that about an 8,000 mile trip! So we would be looking at a two-day trip to get troops to Iraq if they were needed. When Russert started questioning Murtha about the idiocy of basing troops in Okinawa, Murtha changed his tune and started talking about how we had used cruise missiles effectively in the past and that these could be used in Iraq! Here's this horse'sass whining about Iraqi civilain casualties, then talks about lobbing cruise missiles at the insurgents! He apparently also doesn't grasp the fact that cruise missiles are worthless against highly mobile targets. Lastly, for a guy who was whining about the cost of the war, he was proposing using a $1,200,000.00 missile to do blow up some insurgents in a house that the troops could take out for the cost of some rifle ammo.

Just more proof that having worn the uniform makes you someone that anyone should listen to.

"When I take action, I’m not going to fire a $2 million missile at a $10 empty tent and hit a camel in the butt. It’s going to be decisive.”

Probably my favorite original George Bush quote...

There's an old lawyers saw...

...that says when the facts are on your side, argue the facts. When the law is on yuor side, argue the law and when neither is on your side, pound the table.

The politicians version of this is when making easy stands, say you're doing the peoples will. When taking hard ones, say you're standing on principle. And when you stick your foor in your mouth...pound the table.

Murtha voted for the Iraq War resolution. He's now pounding the table.
