This is a very fair point. I suppose it’s kind of a thoughtless, reflexive thing to say on any special day. Perhaps a better phrase for Memorial Day is something more like “Thank you for taking the time to remember our fallen soldiers on this day.”

I do not and I don’t think that is politicizing it either. Your original statement politicized it.

My intention was not to politicize, and I have to admit that it is difficult for me to see how others would view it that way: images of soldiers celebrating homecoming, words acknowledging the sacrifice of their fallen brethren.

An image about a political rally seems explicitly political though.
