Just make sure you have tight connections. Poorly done connections and loose fittings can cause outages. So if you rewire your house and put your own connections on and they aren't good, you can knock an entire area offline. Cable companies have an analyzer that monitors nodes for noise, if it goes above a certain level, it alerts the company and a tech goes out to track the noise down. Depending on the size node and how many "problems" are found, it can take 2-3 days, if not longer, to clean it up to be back in spec. 90% of the time it's a loose connection at the modem. All the frequencies electrical equipment put off ends up in the return path of the cable.

As far as the data cap, someone was correct. Its put there as a just in case thing. Most people are internet only these days. What they put those there for are the people that run gaming servers that are active 24/7 and stuff like that.

So I checked Metrocast's acceptable use policy (not updated since 2011, WTF) at https://www.metrocast.com/policies/high-speed-internet-acceptable-use-policy/ which states that it is our responsibility to monitor our own usage, and going over the cap is a violation of the AUP which they can use to terminate your service if they see fit.

Since the date actually says effective Jan 1 2011 - suggesting the policy was decided earlier - I have to think they've improved matters considerably, because it's been close to six years.

I also checked our usage and wow, it's up, too, because we're using more streaming services and I work from home.

I actually called them in 2012 after this policy went live (was living with 4 people at the time) asking if the data limit would be a problem and the customer service rep had to ask a manager and told me we would be notified when the limits are enforced. I have bought my own place and pay for my own account since then and it's been peachy even though I am a "cable cutter," though honestly I have never paid for cable TV directly (30yo).

Same with the damn cable boxes they charge $9.00 a month for. In the 30 years we've had MetroCast, I have NEVER seen a NEW box. I finally asked why we have to continue paying a monthly fee for boxes that have been paid for 100 times over, and why I can't get a brand new cable box? Answer: We refurbish all our boxes to a "new" condition. And of course, you can't use your own box anymore. What a scam they've got going. BTW, Connect One is now doing MetroCast's maintenance. They are out of New York and they have technicians who live in the MetroCast areas. Service guy told me MetroCast had a hard time keeping employees. True or not; Connect One rep fixed the problems we were having with On Demand. Haven't had a single problem since he repaired all the cable connectors.

METROCAST has not been serving St. Mary's County for even 20 years. They are just the most recent owned of the franchise, let's see I remember Western Shore which was purchased by GNP (Gans Communications or something like that) and THEN METROCAST bought out them. All small local cable companies, way down on the list from Verizon, Comcast, Cox, so don't hate on them to much. Each company tried to improve on the infrastructure left by the company before them. Maybe in 20 years they will catch up to the 21st century. Cause your choice is a set of rabbit ears and they know it.

Before all that, it was called American Cable. I'm talking late 80's.

Metrocast speed test.. 102.98 down... only 13 up... but up may have more to do with my phone?

But 102.98? Holy hell... and no more 30GB cap from my phone data plan? Worth every penny.

It's only rated for 10 up I believe. I get around 13 too.
