Mexico...um, this is not looking good.

If Mexico implodes, oh well. They did this to themselves. That's probably why the Mexican illegals in this country are twisting themselves in knots over the possiblity of having to actually follow a law - they're not used to it.

Okay - safety in anonymity and all that acknowledged, it is still worthwhile to understand the dynamics of the Mexican situation because, try as we might to the contrary, if nothing else Mexico is a sore on our collective behind that will continue to cost us in one form or another. Geography can't be helped.

By contrast, Canada is less of a problem because they take care of themselves and their people tend to stay up there or immigrate legally. We can be very glad that such is the case. Canada isn't wicking away the things that Mexico does.

If Mexico becomes a part of the US, their will be no argument about the cost of medicine.

Really? Or will the geographic locale of the cheap drugs change overnight? And don't forget to consider Canada.

I don't understand why people go there. Has anyone been anywhere in Mexico that wasn't a sh!thole?

Of all the nasty places in the world that I've been to, Mexico is the worst. That means it is worse than Pakistan, the Phillipines, and Waldorf.

I absolutely love Cabo San Lucas. FAR from being a sh!thole. AWesome restaurants, best fishing in the world, beautiful people, incredible beaches... what more could you want?

Which part of that was funny? I don't think it's so far fetched.

We're too close and it's much easier and less risky for them to jump borders instead of fighting a revolution. They don't trust themselves among their own families. How are they going to build enough trust amongst themselves to organize a revolt?

Lots of places are nice, but they're never far from a sh!thole. Puerto Vallarta was beautiful with million dollar condos on cliff over looking the ocean. Two blocks away women were washing their clothes in the river.

History here....

1911-1920 The Mexican upheaval costs up to 800,000 lives (perhaps more)
Banditry, foreign weapons being imported, Fighting factions based on regional differences,....millions of Mexicans DO NOT FLEE to America because: they can't afford it, and our nation is not especially inviting, there is no welfare, housing subsidies, no-cost health care, etc.

2006-2009 Mexican upheaval follows a call for a socialist president to spread the wealth of the oil. Foreign companies lose their holdings in sweeping seizures and debts are renounced. Like Nigeria, factions begin to fight over posession of oil rigs & refineries. Millions of refugees surge toward the US border and the collective condemnation of our "greed" causes us to "for the sake of humanity" welcome millions more displaced persons...who see commercials, Govt forms, TV channels, and schooling--all in Spanish

They bring higher rates of infectious diseases swamping our withering health care system, overwhelm our schools, and poor money into Latino gangs that promise "protection."

Election 2012...a secession documents are petitioned in California, New Mexico and Texas.

Do you really think so? Something like Cancoun (sp?)? I guess, properly marketed, that could be true. One big draw being the Incan (or is it Mayan?) ruins. They also have a very young volcano. I guess I should go look and see what else they have to offer touristas.
We visited Cozumel, Playa del Carmen (briefly) and toured the Mayan ruins at Tulum. It was absolutely gorgeous, the people were friendly, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

I just did a brief search (excluding the Associated Press and the Washington Post) for up-to-date Mexico news headlines, and found none that were up-to-date and not propaganda. I'm sure the stuff is out there but I'm not going to search all day.

But it sounds like the poor downtrodden people stay that way down there, unless Manna from Heaven (Money from the U.S.) falls on them and they have financial clout. So, those who come up from the poor folks have, by definition, prospered under the current dynamics of the country. They rise to the top by buying power/influence. What's their motivation to really effect changes? I read that all the candidates for president are bad ones, and I can see where that is likely the case.

So if the common people revolt and overthrow the establishment, what really changes? They have new leaders, who now commence lining their own pockets the way the people they displaced once did.

It seems like a vicious and seamless circle.

I think it was an optimistic view, myself. It sure would be nice if they COULD fix their own problems. Good thinkin'. :yay:

A couple of questions for general discussion:

Looking at it from a capitalistic point of view, what could they do to be self-sufficient?

How could they generate enough honest revenue to (a) get their infrastructure straightened out and (b) get their quality of life up to reasonable standards without picking Uncle Sam's pocket?
Irrigate and grow lettuce?
