theres a list in the Wash. Post today (So. MD section) that list the top middle schools. Where's Charles and St. Mary's. Do they include St. Mary's. I see one Charles, some Calvert and the rest mostly Howard, Montgomery etc. Doesn't this concern the school board?

Where is the link? I can't find the article. Are there any PG schools listed?

WaPo doesn't post the Southern Md section online until a couple days after the fact.

I don't know I have changed the minds as to how well our schools are in the area. Calvert County doesn't seem to have good leadership at all. It seems the Principals make alot of decisions without their approval and I don't agree with that.

I am so furious at the decision that was made at one High School TWO days before school starte that there would be no English 1 in the 12th grades, the students that had signed up for English 1 was automatically placed in the class Pace Setters. Many of the seniors are failing due to this poor judgemant call by the Principal. The majority of this kids doesn't even know what pace setters is about. Good Luck to the seniors graduating from Patuxent High School. Thank you Mrs. Highsmith

Whose approval do you mean?

English 1 is the very basic English class you can take, it's basically for slackers and problem kids. Pace setters is the next level up, its a new thing they started a few years back. It is a much more interactive way of teaching and learning. It's good for kids who are outgoing and good with groups. Rather than just reading and writing the whole time, they do other things such as skits, and presentations. Then there is honors, which is formatted like English 1 but, there is more work and is fast paced, for the smarter kids in the school.

Basically the kids that are failing Pace Setters, it is because they choose not to try and just don't care, the class is way to easy if you participate.

But I don't like Mrs. Highsmith so the decision does suck!

The ratings in the Post were for one thing: MSA scores. Some schools educate kids while some schools teach to the test. This rating is useless because it does not rate the big picture, it only looks at one small part.

If you want to rate a middle school, you have to include the big picture: how prepared are the kids when they get to high school? How many graduate? How many drop out? How many go to college? What kind of SAT scores do they get?

If the kids require BASIC ENGLISH as seniors, the educational system failed them YEARS before the decision to cut "Basic English" from the curriculum.

:yeahthat: except that their parents failed them more than the school did.

If the report was on high schools, it'd be easy to guess which one (E. Roosevelt).

It's hard to tell which one to pick. We're looking at Somer's in LaPlata for our daughter but it seems to change so much each year. Anyone have any experience with Somer's. I hear they're a blue ribbon school.

I went to Somers years ago.....I think all the schools are the same, it depends on your teachers, your child, and how much time the parents are willing to spend helping the kids with homework/or just making sure they do it! However, if you are NOT zoned for Somers, and your child "gets caught" going out of zone she/he will immediately be transfered to the school she is suppose to go to....overcrowding is what I was told.....my kid is going to private school.....
