Migraines and Topamax

I was put on Topamax a little less than two weeks ago. I still have migraines ... :ohwell: Along with that, I have experienced a myriad of other less-than-pleasant side effects:

1. I can't taste carbonation... at all. Open a soda? Flat. Open a beer? Flat. Etc.

2. I can't taste pretty much anything sweet. :cds:

3. I have lost 14 pounds in less than two weeks... (this is sort of pleasant I guess but not healthy AT ALL). :frown:

4. I am more forgetful than normal. Friendly reminder folks: Make sure your car is in "Park" before you try to get out of it. I have done this twice now. I also stop mid-sentence and forget what I am talking about completely... I know..." :wr: "

5. I am losing my hair by the handful... which I am sure has something to do with the alarming amount of weight loss in such a short amount of time. :bawl: I am very self-conscious about this.

I am trying to get in to talk to my doctor this afternoon but of course, his day is booked. I can't just stop taking the medicine because it affects your brain chemistry or something and since I am on two anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds already...my brain chemistry doesn't need any shocking.

I am not looking for sympathy... I am just venting and putting this out there for anyone else who may be experiencing the same thing.

I know this is about the side-effects of Topamax but something to consider about migraines, if you haven't already... Gluten and sugar. Stop eating it. All of it.

And this: Migraines and Gluten

Great post Psy. I didn't even think of that. I am gluten-free myself except for an occasional Bud Light. But you're right! Food allergies, and intolerance can, and do trigger stuff like migraines, and bloating.

It's all about inflammation. Food allergies and intolerance can cause a plethora of inflammation all over the body. Sugar - or more accurately glucose induced by carbohydrates - is an enemy of every cell in your body. Certainly our body can tolerate a small amount of carbs, but when we consume too much your body tries to combat it like it's a disease. Most folks don't even consider weight gain and a lot of aches and pains they are routinely experiencing is coming from the food they eat. Brain disorders (Alzheimer's, ALS, depression, anxiety, ADHD...) are nothing more than inflammation of the brain spurred on by excessive sugar and other toxins.

Another thing to consider is 'leaky gut'. If you have a weak microbiome (poor good-bacteria population) your intestinal permeability is compromised and will 'leak' substances into your blood stream and body that are meant to be filtered and thrown off. These 'toxins' create free radicals that attack the cells of your body to try to fend off the 'toxins', causing inflammation. This can reach the brain and cause all sorts of mental issues. Again, the foods you eat set this caustic process up. I recommend reading Dr. Perlmutter's book 'Brain Maker'.

A Georgetown neurologist also prescribed Topamax for me but also mentioned that most women that suffer from Migraines are deficient in Magnesium. I started one 250mg Magnesium pill every night 3 months ago and have only had 1 migraine in that time. When I went to the neuro I was having one a week. I never started the Topamax, due to the side effects I wanted to try the Magnesium first.
