I've never bought a bike from him, but gotten many parts from him to fix up my old bikes. I have a BMX racing bike from the 70's...can be hard to get some parts.

i had a bike repaired 2 times there for different reasons, the first time was to allign the wheels and when they did that, they raised the seat, which didnt need to be raised. the 2nd time i took it in, it needed some brake work done, and they loosened a bracket i have for my bike lock. i would recommend them for repair work but make sure they dont do any unnecessary adjustments.

Sounds like Mike's is a great place for your bike needs.
Just recently bought 2 cheapo bikes (no gears, or hand brakes and with the big white wall tires, a little bling
) from Walmart to use on the Three Notch Trail up in Charlotte Hall, me and the DW dont need the big fancy many gear ones in our senior years.
I did have a old 10 speed out in the shed that hadnt been used in several years, so it was in pretty bad shape, hand brakes kind of frozen, gears wouldnt shift and if they diid they would slip and a little rusty and the back rim was bent. Took it to Zimmermans Bike Shop, in Loveville (Friendship School Rd. Mennonite) asked him to look at it and see what it would take to get it functional again, didnt have to look brand new and wasnt worried about the rust area's, he got it going and only charged me $15. Thought that to be quite reasonable, he has quite a shop back there and also sells some really nice bikes and has many parts and equipment for your bike.

for Mike. Although I've never purchased a bike from him, many years ago my son was into skating. I bought several skateboards and accessories from him for that. I don't know if he still does the skates, but he was great working with me on the skating stuff. You could pay a 1/5 of the cost and get one at Wally World, but if you want the quality he has it. Mike does a lot for the community, I say you give him your business. I doubt the boys will be disappointed, but if that should happen, I'm sure he would work with you to make everyone happy

Okay, a word of caution (noted a comment above). Mike doesn't do all the work himself, he's got some parttime help, occasionally they don't get it right BUT he stands behid it. He'll double check their work and make any corrections needed.

I am not concerned about the boys being disappointed about my getting a bike from him. Just trying to decide whether or not to take them there before X-Mas and let them picktheir own bikes out or go ahead and and go get them myself and let it be a surprise for X-mas.
I just decided a bit ago to do the later. Let it be a surprise. I have a feeling if I fart around and buy something that absolutely disgusts the boys as long as I don't let them ride it, that Mike would more then likely let me trade it in for another bike. Hope so anyway. I am heading down there in a few. I think they open at 10AM.

Yep, that's the plan. Per the phone book they open at 10 so that's where I'll be heading in a couple.

Cables tend to stretch in use, so things have to be 'recalibrated'
Deraileurs need to be aligned.
Wheels need to be trued.
Brake handles and brakes need to be adjusted..
And anything you found not be right, or just not comfortable enough that may need adjusting to be a better fit.
It's almost like a motorcycle. Not sure about Mike, but the bike shop I used to use would tell you to bring the bike back in 3 months (or I think 50 miles), even if you thought it was perfect. Then at least once a year, depending on the miles, for service.

Or, you could do what my old man did, which was to make me mow lawns and clean up construction sites and so on to earn the money to by my own bike. I damn sure appreciated it a lot more than if he'd just given me a bicycle, like the other kids' fathers had done.

My parental units prepared us all year 'round. The only talk about money in our house was about how we didn't have any. Looking back, I see that that simply wasn't true. That's no kind of way to prepare your children to deal with money, particularly since, even in this day and age, the school systems do not teach personal money management.

My hubby bought a bmx bike from him and thinks he is great. Mike does so much with the kids. He takes the kids to bmx races and events. When the track was open in Chapitco this summer every sunday he was there with the kids.
