College of Southern Maryland, about 20 minutes from the base, has a great nursing program....... :yay: As far as living on a boat, it is much too cold here to do that in the winter. The area around here is pretty rural, but has all the local shopping and restaurants as any town. We are 45 minutes from D.C, and about the same to Annapolis, which is a shopping mecca.

Look at Southern Maryland Higher Ed Center, http://www.smhec.org/. Some of the schools your wife could attend are:

University of Maryland College Park
Towson University
Johns Hopkins University
College of Notre Dame of Maryland
University of Maryland University College
Catholic University of America
Gratz College
Old Dominion University
Johns Hopkins University - Counseling & Spec. Educ
Capitol College
George Washington University
John Hopkins University - Undergraduate
Johns Hopkins University Business
Coppin State University

All of these schools offer classes in the local area.

Good luck!

There are also a number of colleges, some which are listed here, that offer online and flex classes in case there is a transportation or childcare problem.

I was able to complete my degree program with the University of Phoenix last summer by taking online classes.

You sound like you might be coming from a Phrog squadron....Not sure where you are moving from, if you're coming from New River you will think the housing market is awfully expensive, if you are coming from San Diego, you will think it is ridiculously cheap, and if coming from Norfolk....similar.

I don't think you are going to find too many rental boats to live aboard, but if you should have one, the Navy Recreation Center at Solomons Island always seems to have berths.

marina on base

Here is the number for the West Basin Marina on base. Frank can help you out. There are 2 other people I believe who live on their boats there right now. 301-342-3573 We keep out boat there and are happy with it.

Bullchit.. it doesn't get that cold here.. matter of fact this would be the perfect place to live on a boat year round, but you better have a good AC unit onboard in the summer.

The problem is, most of the local marina's have limits as to how many live aboards they want/can have. The towns are trying hard to not have their marinas look like section 8 housing. I don't know the exact number but I believe Solomons is less then 10% of their boats can have live aboards.

If you are military look at putting your boat into West Basin Marina, it's run by PAX River MWR and the prices are considerably less then other Marinas, and the rules are probably much more lax as to live aboards. They have slips with water, electric and sewer hook ups.

Houses aren't flying off the market as soon as they come on this year. That could put you in a better position buying in the fall, depending on how bad sellers want to sell their house. Closing costs are expensive in this county, check with your realtor about that. New builders are offering better deals when it comes to that. Base housing is building new houses (PPV has arrived). I don't know when they will be complete (in process of clearing land), but if you're an officer, and take old base housing, that may put you in a better position to get a new base house. Do you have school-aged kids?

I have no idea what the Corps wants to do with me there? All I know is that on my orders it says PAX River Md and that its a "hot fill billet" for my job, I guess we'll see what the future has in store for me, what areas are reasonably affordable but still nice?

This area is sort of weird, there is often a run down shack right beside a $400,000 mansion. As long as you stay out of houses under 200k you will be fine. A nice older house can be had for about 250k here, a nice townhouse about 220k.

Monitors do some things that make you scratch your head. Could be you are getting an early look at the V-22. Thought all the 46's out west were at MAG 16 at Miramar, while Pendleton just had the snakes and skids of 39.

Oh well, you are in for a culture shock....but houses are definitely cheaper than SoCal. If you are looking for a real estate agent, Hank Landry www.naspax.com is a retired LDO maintainer....he was at one time the Aircraft Maintenance Officer on the Wasp. He's a good and honest man.
