Mold!

C_Jo needs your help, please.

I think I got this right:

His stall shower was leaking and he pulled the whole thing out, along with the top layer of sub-floor. The 2nd layer is full of mold and he can see it between the layers around the shower area, but doesn't know if the entire floor is moldy.

Can he get away with not replacing the subfloor in the whole bathroom since the source of the mold is gone? (And if so, what does he need to treat it with -- bleach? primer?) Or is mold bad news and will take over the entire house if untreated?

He was planning to replace the floor, but just the top layer.

I think that's the whole question.

Anybody have an answer or a suggestion or just want to join the thread because it's about C_Jo and mold?

I have a suggestion. Mold is nucky, and you should just sell your house and start over. There is still a house for sale in our new neighborhood. Please buy it, and we can be lunch buddies.

Mold is very tough to get rid of once you get it.

I was watching a Home Improvement show a few weeks back that uses cheap fixes for problems. They had mold on the other side of the shower wall, which happened to be in a closet.

They used bleach, sprayed it and once it dried they painted it with a special paint that is suppose to prevent it from returning. Afterwards, they used just regular house paint.

Personally, he is torn it up this much, might as well go all the way. I wouldn't take any chances. :shrug:

Don't take any chances! If either of you has a sensitive immune system, and it spreads to anywhere else, you will be sorry. My former MIL had this beautiful ranch in Boerne, Tx ... lots of land, in-ground pool, huge-azz house. It's all been leveled now thanks to mold that started from some heavy rain. She's also been in the hospital more than she's been out since it happened about 6 years ago.

You might want to bring in someone who specializes in this stuff (mold remediation specialist) to take a look as well. It's a small investment for something that could cost you big time if you don't do it right.

This kind of reminds me of the bath fitters commercials... I cringe when I see all the scum and mold and then its not cleaned and a new fitted plastic is put on to make it look clean. Yuck! Where does the mold go in those commercials?

Had the same problem and we opted not to replace the subfloor. BIG MISTAKE! The mold came back and we had to rip the entire bathroom out and replace everything. We've been mold free for over 2 years now. Be safe and replace the subfloor now.

You'd be surprised how many peeps have very sensitive immune systems. The guy that bought my place up there did, and they required an air quality test to ensure there weren't any problems. I had this little tiny area in the garage that had a small mold growth that I'd killed as soon as I noticed it, but they insisted that the entire piece of drywall be ripped out, a mold remediation inspection, and replace that section -- yes, at my expense.

Also keep in mind that anyone who might come to your home also could be susceptible to a mold allergies, and if they fall ill (I'm not sure here) but it could pose a liability issue because you are aware of it (not that I'd nark ).

Thanks for all the mold advice, forum peeps. I'm sure it's the answer he wanted to hear, but I think it's what he expected.

Maybe if he gets off his ass and replaces the whole thing I won't have to use my inhaler nine times a day.

Get the cone shaped ones and thread a rubber band on each side.
