Hi. We just moved to Calvert County and I am looking for programs for teens with Aspergers. I have a 15 year old son who is very high functioning but has alot of trouble making new friends. He really wants to make some friends he can interact with, talking about movies, video games, etc. Anyone know of some local groups for Aspergers teens?

Thanks!!!

Not exclusive to Aspergers kids, but he'd be welcomed with open arms by a local Boy Scout troop. I can get you contact info if you want.

You should call the Arc of Southern Maryland and Parent Place of Maryland for further information. ARC has an office in Calvert County. Good Luck

Parks & Recs has a Therapeutic Recreation division that offers a lot of programs for kids of all ages (up to 21) and of all types of abilities.

The Arc of Southern Maryland doesn't really have an programs for teens & children per se. They may have some resources to assist with funding various activities from various grants & other types of funding they may receive.

Here are some more resources:

Autism Asperger Association of Calvert County

I have a 15 year old stepson who is also very high functioning Aspergers. We have had a very difficult time finding groups or programs. The ones we've found tend to be "one size fits all" efforts geared to children much lower on the spectrum.

Something he's gotten interested in lately is going to Big Larrys in Leonardtown on Saturdays for role playing tournaments, specifically the Yughio (sp?) games. He really likes it and the level of acceptance is great. In fact, some of the other teens there are on the spectrum.

We have tried the summer camps and Challenger baseball. Complete turn off for him. It seems the high functioning people are in a niche of their own that makes them neither here nor there.

Our efforts to find others for him to meet have had limited success. On the rare occasion we do find kids to come over or attampt an outing with, it normally ends up with one teen focusing on their own interests and our son focusing on his. It's very frustrating to be just on the outside of "the bubble
of acceptance looking in but not having the tools to get completely in.

Shoot us a message. Depending on where you live perhaps we could set up a meet and greet.

Good luck.

Sometimes the door needs to be opened by the person on the inside. What would be cool would be if a group of kids would get together and decide that they would "open" that door and invite the Aspergers child in and engage in the activities that interest him.
