I sat at the St. Mary's festival all weekend next to someone who was selling Directway and he saw how much effort I put into the fundriasing for the whole 20.00 that I manged to raise. He gave me a check on Sunday for 75.00 to go towards my bike ride.

Great example to support MY position. All day and the wonderful, generous people only gave $20?? Heck, if I had been there I would have given to that. I'm glad you found one person in the area that is generous like this guy was. But your situation tends to support the notion this the exception, not the rule.

Well considering that 1., the weather stank and 2. I actually made 78.00 but had to pay for the bike also. That wasn't bad at all.

Gosh drive to DC, there are people that would rather run you over then stop and say hello or smile at you.

Not sure about DC, but I work in fairfax and the wife works in crystal city. We have each commented to each other how friendly the people here are. People strike up conversations in the elevator, smile and wish you a good day when you go to the deli for lunch, when you go to giant the clerks stocking the shelves will say hi as you walk by. Even on the train coming out of dc, people are always striking up conversations and just being friendly

Also if you are so generous why don't you click on my link and donate to the cause.

NO, not soley in somd, but it happened a lot more in somd than it did in the place I lived before coming to maryland (SW part of virginia) and where I live now (N.Va). Especially since saint marys is supposed to be this 'nice small town', you would expect better.

ST honey, you really need to get out and experience the rest of the "rude" world firsthand before you bash St. Mary's and its people.

Yeah, Smalltown. I gave. How about you?

It's taking him a while to post, maybe he is donating!

Nah, he used to live in St. Mary's and I'm sure he picked up the rude tendencies we have.

You know...............

I've seen much worse than here, that's for sure. I was in DC once.... there was an accident just ahead of me. I didn't see it, but I stopped to offer help as did several other folks. Still many people drove slowly by honking their horns because the woman who had bumped the other car had ruined their day! Guess what, out of all of us who stopped.... (there were about three) NONE were from DC. We were all visitors. That, I think shows the state of "friendliness" at the big city to our north. I have never had an experience like that here....... for example, I could tell you about the time I was driving down 235, something blew out of the truck and my dog locked me out (long story) .... several folks stopped for me then and I was very appreciative.

After ST's post about his experience with "gangsta rap" I refuse to believe anything he has to say. Hey butthead I use to live in NOVA and came back because this was a much nicer place to live. How long has your wife been in Crystal City? I thought she was in education? I was in Crystal City for over 3 years. People for the most part do not strike up conversations in the elevators or anywhere else..... :bs: :bs: :bs: :liar: :liar: :liar: :loser: :loser: :loser:

Now that makes A LOT of sense. I'll stick where people are friendly

So Smalltown are you going to dig yourself out of the hole and donate, because you are now as bad as the rest of the people that you say things about.

Uhm, ok... What about the gangsta rap was off base? Please, do tell.

She has been in crystal city for about 7 months now. But I did read that after the one year mark, you lose the "newbie" sign on your chest and everyone starts to be rude to ya.

somd much nicer? Like people tell me, all in the eyes of the beholder.

One Christmas Eve night, I came home and realized I had locked myself out of my house. Called the locksmith at close to midnight and explained my situation. He was there in 15 minutes. When I asked him "How much?" he replied, "Merry Christmas" and left.

That was one rude and unfriendly person, let me tell you. :duh: Doug's Locksmith, btw

no hole to dig out of. Using bribery isn't a good way to to get money from people. Ask nicely, and that is a different story.

You started it not me. I don't ask anyone on this board for donations at all, that is not like me. BUT with what you said about the fair, that put me under the impression that you would. Then you are now backpedaling and say that I should ask nicely. I won't ask you at all.

Gosh that makes me sound like a b!tch. :bawl: :bawl:

Nope. We went to somd with high hopes. Our first time in the "real world" with "real" jobs. Looked like a great place with all of the water and such. With both of us coming from a small area, we looked forward to the nice relaxing times that were ahead in Saint Marys (Note, we actually chose st. marys over Reston at the time, figuring we would be happier in the nice, friendly small town). At first we enjoyed it. Got here in the summer, so we had fun around the water. Taking family to solomons island, point look out,st. george's island. Going hiking at calvert cliffs and flag pond was fun. Then winter came and things changed. somd is definately a summer time kind of place. Decided to go to the theatre, and couldn't believe how small the screen was, how bad the sound was, and how sticky the floor was. Went there again for a "blockbuster" hoping ther reserved the good room for the big movies, and realized we must have been in the good room before.
then we ventured to the bookstore for some reading materials, and was astonished by the lack of volume there. Then we had run ins with our builder there which were just stupid, and then problems with some people in our neighborhood causing trouble (nice that we had to call the cops 3 or 4 times to take care of 10 and 11 year olds.).. And the saga continued.
So no, it wasn't like we were forced there and destined to hate it. We wouldn't have bought a house (and looked at buying a new one) if we had not had intentions on staying.

So in other words, ST, you're the kind of guy who needs to live near amenities. St. Mary's doesn't have the ones you want. Case closed. That doesn't make it a crappy place - it just makes it not the right place for you.

And, btw, Katie DID ask nicely for us to donate several weeks ago - wasn't pushy or rude about it at all. That's where I got the link and made my donation.

Granted.........

I would agree, the commissioners are doing a very poor job of bringing the needed services to the population here. If the intent was to limit growth, its too late.... the people have already come here. Now the only course of action is to take a hard look at business sector in Lexington Park, California, and Leonardtown and come up with a plan (look to Bowie, a bad situation made good). Unfortunately our commissioners have taken the tact of avoidance. The incentives for businesses to move here are nil. The development tax/fee for new businesses is extraordinarily high and I understand that the commissioners bagged the Economic Development Committee (EDC) last year. I look around here in total frustration; I don't think I could have imagined that the county would allow for so much empty commercial space. We need an enterprise zone to revitalize Lexington Park....
