More Marines die on bikes than Iraq

Wow. That sucks.

Navy rate is even higher. Sounds like they're on the right track though with that new training program...3/300 that took that class had accidents. I don't think you could expect a better rate than that.

There was a new NAVADMIN release recently (310/08)

Here are some quotes as I can't find a link yet:

"IN FY08, 33 SAILORS PERISHED IN MOTORCYCLE INCIDENTS ALONE. THAT IS MORE THAN THE NUMBER OF SAILORS WE LOST IN OIF AND OEF COMBINED THIS YEAR."

...and this is one of the control mechanisms they will have in place:ohwell: Even though I see it as an infringement of my rights, well, you can't argue with orders..

"B. ALL MILITARY PERSONNEL WHO OWN A MOTORCYCLE, EVEN IF THEY DO NOT INTEND TO RIDE ON BASE, WILL PERSONALLY REPORT MOTORCYCLE OWNERSHIP TO THEIR COMMANDER, COMMANDING OFFICER, OR OFFICER IN CHARGE, VIA THE FIRST KHAKI IN THEIR CHAIN OF COMMAND WITHIN 48 HOURS OF RECEIPT OF THIS MESSAGE. AS THIS
IS A GENERAL ORDER, FAILURE TO REPORT OWNERSHIP OF A MOTORCYCLE IS PUNISHABLE UNDER THE UCMJ."

and there is some other stuff in there too... GOOD stuff actually...

"A. MOTORCYCLE OWNERSHIP IS A SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITY. PRIOR TO PURCHASING A MOTORCYCLE, ALL MILITARY PERSONNEL WILL CONSULT WITH THE FIRST KHAKI IN THEIR CHAIN OF COMMAND TO BE CERTAIN THEY ARE AWARE OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES THAT COME WITH OWNERSHIP. THESE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE PROPER LICENSING, INSURANCE, REGISTRATION, TRAINING, AND MANDATORY WEAR OF
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE). "

and

"G. COMMANDS SHALL ENCOURAGE MILITARY PERSONNEL TO COMPLETE THE MSF MOTORCYCLE SAFETY COURSE PRIOR TO PURCHASE OF THE MOTORCYCLE ON INSTALLATIONS WHERE THE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAM PROVIDES A MOTORCYCLE FOR USE IN THE COURSE. COMMANDERS SHALL ALLOW MOTORCYCLE RIDERS TO ATTEND THE REQUIRED MSF TRAINING DURING WORKING HOURS."

Part B is pretty invasive all right.

You're active duty,
you have the right to do what you're told and that right seems to supercede all the others

Its cool though. they'll just give you a free m/c safety course. What will they do, though, if you don't pass?

Probably restrict you from riding on base at all, and make you sign a statement saying you understand that any injuries recieved while riding off-base might not be covered/treated by the military health care system.

In the long run, I think this is all part of the move to restrict military from riding at all.

It's a risk they are not willing to pay for.

If military personnel were catching themselves on fire every weekend from turkey fryers they would probably ban the use of those too, but since turkey fryers are mostly used once/twice a year, training is conducted during the "safety stand-down" for the holiday season (which include a segment on the dangers of turkey fryers).

I just wish they'd quit lumping us contractors in with you irresponsible turkey friers.:killingme

The article doesn't mention that there are about 200,000 Marines not in combat at any given time and less than 25,000 in Iraq.

1 - Iraq - 1 fatality per 1,250 men.

2 - Motorcycle - 1 fatality per 8,000 men.

3 - Automobile fatilites for the regular population - 1 death per 10,000 people.

Conclusion:

1 - Serving in Iraq is more dangerous than riding a motorcycle.

2 - Marines motorcycle fatalities are only slightly higher than regular automobile fatalities (cycles are always more dangerous than cars).

3 - The media is misleading. Oh wait, we've known that for years.

Has anyone watched the video on nothingtoxic.com, scooter hit by truck? Truck is all over the road, obviously doing something other than driving.

If you ride a motorcycle, you are risking your life. You simply can't trust other drivers to be responsible and careful.

.

Woldn't it be more accurate to represent the motorcycle fatalities as

"1 fatality per XXX motorcycle owners?" instead of 1 fatality per 8000 men.

Just like you're limiting "iraq fatalities" to well, those serving IN iraq...

No

They're looking at the cause of death for the people in their command. They probably don't even know who has a motorcycle endorsement since that's a civilian ID

If you get out of bed in the morning you are risking your life. And you're quite correct, we don't. At least those who have climbed the rather steep learning curve and ride accordingly.
