I'll bet you do what I do: work on trail breaking and make a game of trying to full stop as little as possible. That's skill practice.
Yep, since 99% of my riding is commute, and the only place I really encounter that is the 1.5 miles into Gate 3, I do just that, leave a little gap, and make it a game to not put a foot down, in some cases I work a lane wide weave to buy myself distance and time while people ahead decide to move. But if I were coming in Gate 1 or 2, where the lead-ins are much shorter, I would not feel right leaving even that small a gap, so having the bike balance would be a good thing.
