Movie Theaters...

Where are my pants?
I beg pardon if this has been discussed before, but I'm too lazy to sift through 66 pages on this section to check. :blushing:

Is there some sort of county restriction that is stopping movie Theaters from coming to St. Mary's county? That little shack in Lexington park has been the only option for as long as I've been here.

Why can't we have a nice big modern 12 screen cineplex with comfy seats (unlike Loews Lex. Park where you're lucky to get one with a CUSHION) and clean floors?

If I were an entrepreneurial type, I'd open a theater down here in a heartbeat---it would be like a full-fledged monopoly!

There is also the theater on base. There is a lady looking at building an entertainment complex in the northern end of the county but I haven't heard anything more than that.

I heard down the grapevine that the Lowes theatre in Lexington Park claimed bankruptcy 5 or so years ago.:bubble: They however managed to stay afloat.

I believe they backed out because First Colony requires their buildings to be of a certain architectural design which the theatre company didn't want to adhear to.

I thought is was demographics and the fact that several movie chains had filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That is the excuse given to the County to replace the movie theaters with a BJs (plus the offer of $$$ to build the pool in Lexington Park).

my thoughts are that if we had a theater in PF or in SMC worth havin'... they wouldn't be filing for bankruptcy.

I think an 8 screen theater with good sound and stadium seating would do well in a location near BJs.

8 screens isn't that many, and if that theater does well, then they can build another one in Solomons or PF.

The new center proposed for across from Wildewood (with Home Depot) is being discussed this week, there's still time to petition the change:cheesy:

Why would I petition the change? I would welcome a Home Depot. It would bring down Lowe's prices.

Are you saying that someone is proposing a theater to go along with this cetner?

The plan was for one of the stadium-style theaters. I've been to the one in White Marsh outside of Baltimore. They're nice, but not all that.

Why did they back out? Partly demographics, if I remember correctly. Also, I read that the theater industry realized that stadium-style theaters weren't making any more money than traditional theaters. Everyone was convinced for a while that these were cash cows.

Yes! The theaters are closets and the place is never clean. To say nothing of the war zone that is the pavement on FDR Boulevard.

But they put up those signs saying it is a private road. Didn't that make it all better?

Muvico

I haul my butt up to the Muvico at Arundel Mills. That is a nice place to see a movie. I agree, that pit in the park is a joke and has been. I mean, the last time I was there, the fabric was falling off the walls, not to mention walking over an inch of crusty pop corn. The base theater is far from nice. It is still the same as when I was a kid. I think that First Colony should be held to their original plan and put in a theater. Of course, I live in the north end, so one up this way would be great also. I mean, if they can put two tire stores within 50 feet, they can build a theater. I mean, rednecks like myself can't possibly need that many tires.
