Moving to Southern MD

Patch

The Pirate
Hi All! I'm moving to Southern, MD soon (got a job at PAX River Navy Base), and am wondering about housing. Are there houses available for less than $250K?

What about crime? I've read that Lexington Park has the highest crime rate in St Mary's county. Is that true?

Can anyone recommend good areas to live that are withing my price range? If there aren't any, what are good areas to live and rent?

Thanks.

Personally, I don’t think there are really any high crime or bad areas in St. Mary’s County. Parts of Lexington Park are not good, but the more people, the more crime, otherwise, I just don’t see it but I moved from Western Charles County about a 1 ½ years ago which is a bit of a higher crime area.

Houses are not moving very fast right now, so I would imagine finding one in your price range wouldn’t be a problem. There are agents who advertise on this forum that might give you a clue.

Good luck!

Stay out of the fire department in the park and don't watch the fights outside at the bars they have been the hotspots for crime lately.

Not really any rampant crime in the area, an occassional nut job will whack someone every once in a while, but typically it's just the usual stuff you have anywhere else.

House for under $250K? Try the classified link at the top of the page and see what's out there.

Lexington Park is a designated "Hot Spot" Crime Rate is soaring. Look in Northern St. Mary's or South of the base.

Just a heads-up: If you receive a PM from a guy named JPC who lists a series of evils about the area -- base in particular, do yourself a favor and delete it immediately. He will probably also bear the moniker :larry: or  or :jameo:

Yes, make Lex Pk your last option because everything you read on the internet is true. :jameo:

Also, please don't drive through Lex Pk to get to your work, crime and all. Don't visit any of the restaurants, banks, post office, fire department or gas stations, not safe. And don't even try being bothered with any of the police or our wonderful state boys as you have been warned through your reading that there is nothing other than a high crime rate and therefore they do nothing.

Other than that :howdy: and welcome to the forums! Keep a lookout for charlie.

Yes, it was definitely a hot spot yesterday in downtown Lex Pk. I really enjoyed the festivities.

Lexington Park has the highest density of our population, thus the proportion of crime is logically greater there and doesn't necessarily mean that it is the worst area, just the one with the greatest concentration of people.

Ken;

Nope, I hadn't heard about the homicide! WOW! I knew the "Park" was
getting bad back in the 80's when I moved away from there (that was
why I moved!) but I didn't think it was that bad yet! I'm sorry for the
family and the employees of the business.

I moved out of MD completely when I retired because crime was getting
bad all through southern Maryland. I was the victim (along with 12 other
households) of armed burglary when I lived in the Ranch Club. It was the
result of a gang of youths living in there. The one who broke into my
house later tried to run down a MSP trooper who was attempting to ap-
prehend him and his accomplices in the progress of another burglary. He
was charged with attempted murder of a police officer and FINALLY was
put in jail! Myself and the 12 other homeowners spent tons of time in
court with lost time and wages and saw the judge and juvenile 'counsellors'
set this kid and his 'friends' free with a verbal reprimand. The judge said
that these "children" were just "misguided" and "needed a purpose in life".

The sheriff at the time (Ward) said in the press that "...there is no gang
activity in Calvert County or southern Maryland..." yet the area was full
of grafitti, property vandalism, roving groups of "kids" at late hours and
crime in the area (..yes, including a couple of shootings! Check back issues
of the Calvert County papers..) was/is rising at an alarming rate.

When I was on the board of directors at CRE at the time, it was listed as
a "Hot Spot" and we got grant monies for programs. The results were a
bit mixed. The biggest problem was lack of response by the local police.
If you really wanted results of any kind you had to call MSP. It seems to
be the same over in St. Mary's as well. The biggest thing I noticed is the
large amounts of DC license plates so far down in that area. You know
darned well that all those people are not down "visiting a sick relative".
Especially when you see them all running around out at night late.

Need to reform the laws and put teeth back in them. I dunno... Looks like
the 'system' is broken in Maryland.

They are available. But not common. You have to bide your time, and pick your moments.

I don't have the statistics, but it sounds likely. I wouldn't recommend moving to the Lexington Park or Great Mills areas to anyone, if they could avoid it. But like anything else, there are sections that are good and sections that are bad. Some of Lexington Park is a crap tank - some of it's nice.

California, Hollywood, Mechanicsville, Leonardtown, Charlotte Hall.

If proximity to the base is an issue, stick to Calfornia or Hollywood. Lexington Park, south of the base isn't too bad, if you get into a non-trailer development.

I have the 2005 Crime Rate books for all three counties right here on my desk. Breaks the crime rate down in nice neat litle sections for each area.

I'm sorry if you are offended but the facts speak for themselves.

Another Question about Moving to SOMD

I may be moving to the St. Mary's County area in a year or 2. What kind of job opportunities are there for someone witha media background? I've done radio news and administrative work in advertising for 20 years. Any ideas on where to look for work that wouldn't be a huge commute?
