Moving to St.Mary's County any tips for...

Hey guys, happy holidays. I'm due to report to a new job in St.Mary's County on Jan 3 and don't know a single soul in the area, so naturally my living situation is up in the air and has me stressed. My only pre-requisite (aside from not living with psychos/criminals lol) is that I refuse to live in an apartment. I promised myself after college those days were done lol. Mainly because every apartment I lived in had paper thin walls and it drove me nuts. I definitely want to live in a house. Aside from creeper central (aka Craigslist) does anyone know of any other information source for finding a place to live? If not, does anyone know of or can recommend a place I can stay that allows weekly/monthly stays? I figure at the very least I could do that until I meet some folks and get my bearings on a living situation. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Look in the classifieds section on this site. There are homes for rent and people with houses looking for roomates. There is also an Extended Stay America in Lexington Park right by gate 1.

Excellent! Thanks everyone for your help! I'm going to check the classifieds this week for sure and the Extended stay when I get to town.

@Farmcats I wish I could afford to live solo but after some great advice there is no way I think I could afford it.

Home2 Suites by Hilton just opened. Awesome extended stay place. Free breakfast and free laundry. Fitness center and indoor pool. Also pet friendly. A great place. We were their first guests and we can honestly say it really felt like home.

Welcome to the area. Not sure where you are moving from, but there are a lot of super nice folks in this area. Few jerks, too- but they make us appreciate the good people even more!
We moved here from southern California 6 years ago and this is a much friendlier place :) I met a lot of the people I know area through the forums, too.

Winters vary here But depending on where you lived, the summers may be familiar! Hot & humid and buggy! 17 years on the gulf coast of FL...

Stayed in Extended Stay American when we moved to the area in 2005, if the same people are working there (including Management) I would run from there as fast I could. They were horrible but other than the drug infested Days Inn, they were the only ones who allowed pets at the time.

Really? Because that was my temp home of choice when I used to come down here from Frederick.

They have a studio apt for $795/mo and I believe they rent those month to month. Take your time finding a house because sometimes these neighborhoods look great, then you find that the houses are hiding some sketchy characters because they're Section 8 rentals.

Welcome to St. Mary's County! Around here we say Merry Christmas. The majority of us aren't part of the politically correct crowd. You're coming to a county that has a 30 million dollar surplus in taxes. However, it's not enough for the county. Therefore, by 2013 or sooner you will see red light cameras to increase their surplus. And that's just the local county. The state loves taxes. I believe this state is in the top 5 most taxed in the nation. Most of the neighborhoods, with the exception of Lexington Park is good. I wouldn't recommend Lexington Park, or anything close to it.

Not all parts of Lexington Park are bad. Mainly the Great Mills Road areas aren't too safe.

My stay in Maryland is only intended to be around 2 years give or take. I was shocked to learn that such a affluent area like Southern Maryland has section 8 housing and after calculating my take home salary I fully expect to be angered every time I see how much of my paycheck is being raided for taxes lol. Hopefully I won't be living hand to mouth but I have faith I will make the right living decision *fingers crossed for sane people* lol

What's wrong with Lexington Park area? I assumed with all the military folks around that area it would be more 'normal' than most areas?

Area is fine, there is a small section that is worse than the rest just like every other place in this nation.
