Was working for a fast ferry operation between Malta and Sicily back in the late 80s when that beeyatch was going off. We'd overnight in Catania. First order of business every morning was to sweep and scrub all that damned black grit off the boat decks before the passengers started arriving.

Several Sigonella deployments under my belt. Best story is during a eruption, several squadron mates wanted some close up pictures, but were halted by local cops on the way. They flashed their Military ID's and claimed they were with the Navy Geological Survey.

They got the pics.

I skied up there when it was spewing grit. Got home and was still shaking gravel out of my googles. Parts of the slopes were covered up rock with little snow. You had to be careful or else ruin your skis.
