Mutant Fleas

Went out about a month ago and bought flea drops....can't remember the name of the brand, but not one I'm familiar with, but hey, the ingredients are all the same, right?

I got 2 kinds, some for kittens under 5 lbs and some for all cats over 5 lbs.....our kitten was a little over 4 lbs.

This was preventative, we hadn't actually see any fleas.

Less than 3 weeks after applying the drops, Huntr noticed that Smudge, the kitten had some fleas, so he got a bath in flea soap. He was completely covered in dead fleas after that.

After he dried off, I inspected him and found one living flea.

So, I bought some more flea drops, Hartz this time and since the kitten is now 5lbs, he got full strength. These drops were applied over this past weekend.

So, Smudge was sitting in his favorite spot today...on the back of the couch where he could slide down onto Huntr's shoulder when he wasn't looking, and Huntr noticed that the cat is STILL covered in fleas. So he got another bath.

The other 2 cats have showed no signs of this problem.

If the cat has fleas, they're in your house. Fleas spend relatively little time on the cats. Hartz flea stuff is crap. Go to the vet and pay for the good stuff. Advantage or Frontline.

Not necessarily the same stuff.

My vet is $20 a pack cheaper than Petco.

Petco is WAY more expensive. Southern States has the same exact Frontline topical that I use to purchase from the vet. It's not a drastic savings but it is a little cheaper.

i think petco was 56.00 for a 3pk of frontline for the dog (no i didn't buy it from them they don't even carry the dose the dog needs) I got it from my vet along with her heartguard.

Get Advantage. Regular Advantage. NOT Advantix. Buy the largest dog size they have, and get the proper dosage for your cats. The little 1cc syringes work perfectly for dosing directly out of the tubes. You save a ton of money this way, and Advantage works. Frontline hasn't been working so well lately.

Hartz and other store brand stuff is crap.

I don't put Frontline on the dogs all year. Instead, I usually wait until I see the first tick. After that, off to the vet for their check-ups and Frontline. This year it worked great for us and I never saw another tick on either doggie.

:yeahthat: I've never found a tick on Mily :knockonwood: but I start the Frontline in spring and she usually never needs more than 3 doses all year. Granted that due to her allergies she's inside a good deal.

I used Frontline on the cats and Scooter last year. I still had fleas, even after months of treatment. I used Advantage for 2 months and the fleas were gone. I haven't treated them since early spring or late winter and they're still flea free.

I get the "program injectable shots" for my cats, and we have NEVER had fleas.
It is a biannual shot. I only get our cats vaccinated in the spring tho. it carries them through the winter with out any fleas.
For our dogs we uses the Reveloution which is good for fleas, ticks and heartworms. It works the best for us.

Not really impressed with frontline and advantage(x). But it is better that the junk you can pick up in the grocery store or pet store.
