As a matter of fact, when I got married, I still had 3 years until my renewal. They asked if I wanted to get a whole new license or did I want a "change" card, like you get with an address change. The new license was $20, the card was free. If I had to do it again I'd get the new license b/c no one ever looked at the card. Even when I got a ticket, the cop put it in the wrong name and since in MD the license # is tied to the name, it also had the wrong # on it. (Somehow they still found me though:shrug
