My Gram always says "nothing good happens after midnight" and that everyone should be home in bed by then. Growing up in NY, where the bars close at 4am, I always laughed at her.

Her concern has always been the higher likelihood of being hit by a drunk/drugged up driver. Since moving here 2 years ago and seeing the number of people who drive fubar, I now think my Gram has a good point. Face it, there's nothing to do in Calvert that late except be at a bar.

It occured later than that, around 4 I believe. He was on his way to pick up the disabled person that he picks up every day to take someplace, (I forget where). He doesn't drink so in case you were thinking................

The article posted earlier said police responded about 0230. I passed it at 0420 and they were cleaning stuff up and nobody but police blocking the road and one fire truck were on scene. And.. I wasn't implying he was drunk. Just thought it was strange for somebody of that age out on the road at that hour. Most people out during the week are driving to work.

I wondered the same thing. I'll blame my past career as an auto claims investigator for me even thinking that. :ohwell:

I'm really glad that this man will be ok. It seems to be a common place for accidents.

:yeahthat:

This article says it happened around 0230 also. Not saying he was but.. people who speed on Rt 4 at that hour drive me nuts. I'm terrified all the deer that are out and about will run right in front of cars and the drivers won't be able to stop. Also, since most traffic is heading north at that hour, the deer are even worse heading south because the cars are so few and far between.

And the way I read the article, I'm thinking it was the 27-yr old (Fitzgibbon) who could have been under the influence rather than the 74 -yr old man.

That's the impression I get also. The article says Fitzgibbon is the one who has charges pending against him.

It is strange for someone to be out at that hour, I'm not sure of the exact time of the accident (2am or 4am). The article also says was Tuesday AM but I know for sure it was Wednesday.

Anyway, he was out for good reason, on his way to pick someone up that he provides transportation to.

You are correct to assume that the pending charges are NOT for the 74 yr old. I've never really paid attention but in over 30yrs of family events I can't think of one time that I've seen him with a drink.

He's currently not doing well.
Please keep him in your prayers.

He's certainly in my prayers...

I'm sorry that someone who was doing something good for another had to be hurt by someone who was selfishly driving under the influence and caused serious harm to an innocent person.:burning:

Couldn't have said it better myself. All too often, it's the innocent person who gets hurt/killed while the selfish bastard who decided to drive drunk or high walks away with a slap on the wrist.

Poster, my thoughts are with your family. I really hope Robert pulls through and is ok. What a nightmare.

**update**

Robert Burdette is still in ICU with his condition listed as "guarded". Facial injuries and lung, kidney, liver problems (this from the family). We all pray for his recovery.

The legal issue is even worse. Sean Fitzgibbon of Friendship Md was driving a company car (dealer tags) and the insurance company is trying to back out saying he was not authorized to drive it. Sean lives with another family member Joseph (dad?) and has no auto insurance of his own. The Fitzgibbon family never contacted their insurance, even weeks after the accident. The Burdette lawyer had to track it down and make notification. Sounds like a legal nightmare with no happy outcome. I wish them luck.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that Robert is still in the ICU. I hope he pulls through and recovers soon. :huggy:

So this drunk moron......does he work for the car dealership that the car belongs to? Many employees that work at auto dealerships don't have vehicles of their own because they have access to drive the dealership vehicles. Not saying that's the case here.

Sounds like it's going to take a while to get this all settled legally. In the meantime, I'll keep this innocent man in my thoughts and hope he makes a full recovery.

I was hoping this wouldn't be the outcome. R.I.P. Mr. Burdette. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. :huggy:

Another innocent person killed, just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. When will these idiots stop putting innocent lives at risk?

The driver of a pickup truck that was struck from behind and careened head-on into a tree last month has died, and Anne Arundel County police said Monday they will meet with prosecutors regarding possible criminal charges stemming from the crash.

Robert F. Burdette, 74, of Clinton died Sunday at Prince George's Hospital Center. Burdette was driving a 1995 Ford Ranger south on Route 4 near Plummer Lane in Lothian on Oct. 6. About 2:30 a.m., it was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Sean Kevin Fitzgibbon, 27, of Friendship, police said.

Burdette's pickup went off the road and crashed into a tree. Police said at the time that they suspected speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident
.

And yet this man is still not in jail !!!
I don't understand why he has not been arrested.
It has not been suspected that speed and alcohol were a factor for some time now. THEY KNOW IT WAS!!

JMO..it wasn't Mr. Burdette who was at the wrong place; it was the idiot who is believed to have been drunk!! He is the one who shouldn't have been on the road.
