My computer is loud

Sounds like a jet taking off. I was on the phone with a client and she was like, "What IS that???" It also pegs out a lot.

This hard drive is less than a year old - any ideas what it might be?

Mine will sound like that when MacAfee is doing a scan...sometimes.

hard drives, especially the newer ones, aren't that loud, even when going full out.

I'd guess that either it's a VERY loud (probably caked with dust) fan, or your CD/DVD drive is spinning up. You can easily replace a fan if you want with a quieter one, or just open the case and blow all the dust out of it, making your fan more efficient and not running as often or as hard. your CPU should have small cooling fins on it, topped with a fan. Get a can of compreseed air and blow all the dust out of the box paying close attention to the CPU and the cooling fins/ fan. Also check the air inlets on the back of the Box, make sure they aren't jammed up with dust.

Thanks - I'll check that. It doesn't do it all the time, it's more of a revving up, then gets quiet, then revs up again.

Without physically looking into the box or hearing the sound, my guess would be dust.. and overworked cooling fans.

That sounds like a CD. Got something in the drive? If not, it's more than likely one of the fans. Many fans are now speed controlled depending on the temperature in the case, so you get a rev up and slow down noise.

Nope, but that's exactly what it sounded like.

Note the past tense - Bob was right. The vents were crudded up, so I popped the case and gave it a cleaning. So quiet now!

Thanks, Bob!

Hopefully you don't have your tower on the floor. I just found out that is a big no no. I put mine on top of the desk now and not nearly as much dust and cat hair get in it. Who knew?

It gets even worse if you have cats or dogs.
