My dog is making sounds like shes trying to (for lack of a better phrase) Hock a loogie. Its been for the last couple days and its only once or twice a day but what is it? At first I thought something was stuck in her throat so I massaged it and nothing came out. she just loved the attention :) but she did it again this morning. Is this allergies maybe? Think something is still in there? She doesnt seem to care about it but I would like to fix it.

My friend's dog was doing that last weekend in the heat. She mentioned something about allergies. Could be, but I don't know much about dogs. If you're concerned though, a vet visit never hurts.

You could even call with a question about it, and see if they can reccommend a Benadryl dose. I've been told cats can have small amounts of the liquid or pills, but I wouldn't attempt the liquid. I don't know what I was thinking when I tried to give my cat that stuff... Those Pill Pockets by Greenies are the best way to go.

Oh, and those pill cutters you can find at Wal-Mart in the cold & flu aisle are really good for trying to cut tiny pills into animal-appropriate doses.

They look like tiny Thermoses. The top flips open to show the grasper and blade, and a cup unscrews from the bottom to expose a crusher. They're really useful when you need another half a dose of something, or are on travel. And your pets :)

Good luck, hope your pup feels better.

Benadryl doses for a dog are 1 pill for every 25 pounds. That was what the vet had told me awhile ago since my pug has allergies.

My first question is what kind of dog is it and how old? I ask because I had a Golden Retriever that had something similar to what you describe. She was an older dog when she developed a dry hack that I thought might be allergies. I had tried Benadryl but had no luck with it. So I took her to two vets, one in Waldorf and one in Leonardtown for them to tell me Congestive Heart Failure was setting in. I was referred to a specialist in Rockville. It was determined at the only visit to the specialist that she simply had internal scarring of her lungs. I was also told that it is a fairly common thing for larger dogs to develop scarring as they age and they were very active in their youth.

It doesn't make the fattie pug of mine all doped up, just stops him from scratching his stomach.

Always best to make sure with the vet, so that they can consider any previous health concerns and breed to adjust the dose appropriately for your pet.

My vet and others I've asked about this specifically say you should administer up to 1mg/lb every 8 hours (or 3 times a day -- tid). So if you have a 20lb dog, it's 20mg of diphenhydramine. This is higher than the equivalent dose for humans, but nevertheless seems to be the accepted dose for dogs.

Found this when searching for the correct dosage to make sure I wasn't giving fattie the incorrect dosage and I'm not.

If she's doing it from the nose/throat it's post nasal drip and the dogs way of clearing its throat. My vet called it a reverse sneeze.
